I only use clipless pedals on my road bike, but the difference is huge, power
through the entire revolution, and it doesn't fatigue you twice as much as it works different muscle groups on the way up, roadie pedals are more precise like most roadie components as they dont have to deal with mud, i wouldnt want to use the same on both types of terrain, same for the shoes, roadie ones in mud would be a disaster, and mtb ones on a road bike would make you look stupid, even more than being lycra clad |

Look around your local bike shops. Or ask friends. I picked up a carrera kraken (don't mock guys its a great entry bike) for £30 off a friend. Spent a few hours and some money on new parts. Now its a great little bike. Only thing is im now tempted to sell and get an upgrade. Unrelated, what is the difference between road and MB clip in pedals? Are they really work it? Chainreactions have the shimano M520 pedals with cleats for £18.??, free delivery. I have seen them advertised as both road and MTB seperately. Whats the difference? I like the idea of having a set on my road bike and one on my MTB without having to change the cleats all the time. |

If you are looking to spend only £200, as Grumph says eBay is the only answer really. You should be able to pick up a relatively tidy bike for that. What size are you? I am sure we could throw out a few ideas for you. If you don't know what frame size you require, how tall are you as a starting point? Things to look for are a good frame and a decent set of suspension forks. A cheap set of forks can ruin a bike. Better to have no forks than bad heavy forks! |

Hmmm, thats pretty nice.
I nearly bought a Giant Trance X frame and shock on ebay yesterday but got distracted at the vital minute. Doh. Can you negotiate a tidy discount on those Transition bikes Grumph?! ![]() |

![]() Grumph, yes it did feel good. Not often you get to the top of a hill in Wales to be dazzled by sunlight glaring of crisp white powder! If it hadn't been so time consuming riding up the hill I would have done another lap to sample the DH run.... next time! |

I'm certainly not a great cyclist like you guys but I enjoy a ride at the weekend. A few weeks ago, a friend of mine and I were riding on bridleways in West Sussex. I was following him at one point and shouted at him "Keep going!" - "I can't!" came the answer... and he stepped off his bike. I laughed and stepped off my bike too. Then took a photo: Apologies for the dodgy picture quality. I took it with my phone. |
