Hi guys, I have just spotted that it was just about a year ago that I started this thread! I never suspected that it would lead to 32 pages of Projection 762 chat, discussion and exchange of information realating to our favourite boat. Long may it continue! Thank you Yachts and Yachting (especially Mark Jardine) |

Hey Chic , had an interesting ECSW meeting last sat .
Handicaps did come up ! Jim Scott certainly puts what seems a lot of work in to his system . He's keen to have a conversion system from PY to NERR , don't know how that will work , I'm going to keep my head down and mouth shut . Some people sound pretty peed off with your PY system , I know when our boats travel north its a hot topic ... some boat.. " Jezabel " or something creates a lot of comment ? I wonder who She belongs to ? From all I see I think I would be most happy sailing under IRC , however .... ECSW 2008 is well in hand , we look forward to welcoming some Scottish folk . Doug . |

We sail off 880 in Helford, which is a bit harsh. We used to sail under both PY and IRC at the same time and had a v good comparison. We were about 90 seconds worse off under PY compared to IRC on a 1.5 hour race. I reckon PY 900 is fair for a P762. |

We're averaging about 890 which seems closer to your handicap... However what we achieve is closely related to the amount of breeze; planing conditions will allow us to improve considerably, but in light winds we're close to the back of the fleet. We managed a third a couple of weeks ago which is the best we've done for a while! It's what you'd expect, I suppose... Yes, in theory the handicap committee will adjust our rating to reflect an extra season's data. I'd be grateful for anyone else's PY ratings; I can use it as evidence that we're being unfairly hit. |

ECSW next year will be under our NERR system . Its local , we are not allowed to view how it works , we are also sure there is a "fiddle factor " for measurers to play with . If a boat does well the h'cap gets worse , unless of course you are a handicapper ! They are attacking sportsboats a lot at present ...playing with keels at the moment etc ... as the h'cappers don't sail SB's they are not really popular with them and they keep coming up with stuff to help displacement yachts ? This is only my opinion of course . However NERR does seem to look at SBR and IRC numbers to make sure they are not too far out .
At Cowes it was mainly light airs so we struggled a bit ( we were also learning the area, tides etc .. ) , once we got a bit of breeze we faired better .There were some really quick local J80's though .. some good sailers no doubt , better than we were ,we had to sail v close to shore on occasions , found rocks once , the locals did really well here , the IRC classes were kept in deeper water and would not of had the same prob I guess .. this would have suited us better . The only thing with IRC class to make me think is a busier startline with much heavier boats than us ! Overall I suspect it would have been a better choice perhaps . The PY system on the forth is not popular with visiting yachts from our area . We could sleep on board , I have done , its just the ammount of "stuff" to clear in morning , and all those spare sails etc .. you tend to take to away matches, it all would not fit in my truck .We have girlies on our crew also ... you know how much stuff they will need for a week! Doug . |

sleeping onboard will be fine, watching Ray Mears over the years has given me the tools i need to survive! think class 4 would be the best bet, during the season we have found our performace is better against larger yachts than it is againts big dinghys (Sports boats). Burnham week and Sail East at Dabchicks proved that. We'll have to see though because there is a lot of events on the cards at the moment, Burnham week, Sail East, club racing, so budget and time permitting..... Chic your handicap is incredible, we sail off 901! i wouldnt even bother with yours! surely they will change it to reflect your results over a season? Edited by slop_idol |

'What class to sail in' is a constant problem for us; so far we've always opted for sailing with the faster yachts rather than with the sportsboats. The 762 seems to fall pretty much between two camps but on balance we've felt that it has more in common with a displacement yacht than say an SB3. There has been some controversy on the Forth because in the two biggest regattas the sportsboat class has had to be abandoned due to lack of entries and 707s, SB3s etc then sailing with the 'fast yachts' (we use PY for class racing here); there is even some talk of forcing some boats to sail in the sportsboat class - the old question then arises 'what is a sportsboat?'. But that is a well-covered thread in other forums. This is no doubt a topic that will come up during your ecsw meeting in Edinburgh, Doug - you have been warned! I'm curious to know whether you'll use PY for ecsw at Blyth... If so you'll have to contend with our harsh handicap of 873. I feel we sailed well this year at the Forth's ecsw but we didn't manage anything better than a 10th. |
