Time to test everybody's corporate awareness and contacts... I have a couple of ideas that I think would be great developments for performance dinghys - but I am never going to be able to make them myself. What I want to do is sell these ideas to one of the major hardware companies. Here is the problem - to do this you need to know somebody at a suitably senior level in said company to write to. So - to cut a long story short does anybody know any of the senior management in these companies: Crewsaver, Douglas Gill, Musto, RWO, Magic Marine, Holt. CHeers... |

Can't help with names....
have you considered copyright / patent / intellectual property rights etc? i'm no expert, but if your idea is a money spinner it is adviseable to, at the very least, get some advice on this BEFORE speaking to any of these guys. Imagine Mr Magic Marine (for instance) saying he's not interested, and then seeing your technological breakthrough flying off the shelves in 12 months time.... gutted! |

Dr. C is spot on Blobby. What he said is a stone cold 24 carat certainty. Take it from one who has been on the receiving and giving end of the equation. Good Luck PS...Try companies house website. |

The simplest method is quite often the best - ring them up & ask who is responsible for development of new products! Don't send an email as it will look too much like spam. Speak to them direct but be economic with the amount of detail you give them for the above reasons. |

The sensible approach would be to start with the DTi so you understand what is involved in bringing something to market. Try the Design Council

A cheap way of copyrighting untill u do it properly is to write down exactly what the ideas are diagrams etc and then post it to yourself! Post office stamp has the date on it. Proof of when u came up with it!

This would give you a claim to the written word (book, play etc) but would not be a patent and therefore not protect the invention from copying. I can't emphasis enough if you have something you think is an original non-obvious idea with an 'industrial application' (that is worth money) you need to get advice from the Patent Office (and not tell anyone any details until you have the correct paperwork in place). Given that if you have access to the Web finding out the correct processes is fairly easy, you can then make an informed decision on what to do. And if you do want names of SM to send information to you ring the switchboard and ask the nice person who answers if they can give you the name and address of the Director reponsible for Technology / Development and they tell you. You then write it down and send a brief well constructed letter telling them your idea and what the benefits are. I would also target an organisation that is committed to innovation as it will be easier. Think of the process as applying for a job but 100 times harder and you will have some idea of the work and committment involved. Edited by Garry |
