AVG 9.0 free is about the best of the free ones at the moment. Zonealarm Free is not getting very reviews for the free firewall at present though the Pro version is still very good. Comodo is probably top of the free firewalls with PC Tools not far behind and a lot less fussy.
Sophos is great but only if you work for a company that can pass on the free licence deal. Mine used to but doesn't anymore. The M**rosoft Security Essentials seems to pick most things up but doesn't scan e-mails or have heuristic scanning like AVG. Wouldn't bother using Norton or McAfee as they both used to be resource hungry, though by all accounts they have got better in recent years. Oh by the way for the person that set up the word filtering on this forum, the M**rosoft word exchange thing is very petty, they exist and will still do so for a very long time, so get over it and deal with them. Oh and for the record Apple and Google ain't saints either, and I use Mint Linux on my laptop before you have a go at me for being a M**rosoft fanboy Edited by maxibuddah |

I used to use AVG (free at home and professional at work) however when work moved to Sophos with a licence that allowed use on home computers too, I changed all home machines to Sophos. I foundthe kids machines both had viruses that AVG had failed to detect even with a full scan, but Sophos cleared them up. Very pleased with Sophos, it seems to sit there without being resource hungry. I have always found Norton to be very resource hungry.

M**rosoft is a an abomination and a curse, that's why it's censored.
Kaspersky or AVG, though AVG can be picky if it finds even the slightest trace of another antivirus on your drive. Edited by winging it |

forget all the above, and go for the free and best one I have found to date.
Download "M**rosoft Security Essentials" from MS, it works, catches even unknown ones that Norton missed (personal experience hitting our network at work) If anyone asks at work, thats all I will recommend now. So why is ic * out? Edited by radixon |

I always found AVG a bit heavy. On our Windoze kit we use Kapersky - cheap, effective and unobtrusive. Difficult to spell though.
Macfee - yuk. And after some bad times with Norton in the pre Cambrian era - never again. But I understand they are better now. Zone Alarm since the Zone Lab days become bloated. Mind you on our real computers - Mac and Ubuntu - we just chillax. |

I have AVG on three machines - it is cheap, light on resources and works great, plus they are really helpful if you need to call them for help

AVG free version + Zone Alarm free firewall seems to give a reasonably safe surfing experience. AVG does have anti spyware functions but if you want dedicated spyware control then try Adaware.

Personally, I use AVG (The paid edition). It is truly
fantastic, blocks viruses from getting onto your system really well, and in the unlikely event that one does get through, it will notify you straight away. It's easy to use and it doesn't slow down the computer. Whatever you do, do not bother with Norton. It is completely rubbish, when I upgraded from Norton to AVG, there were about 200 viruses on our family computer than Norton had failed to pick up. Don't use anything free either, unless it is from a reputable business. You will run the risk of downloading something dodgy. Feel free to PM me if you would like any more advice :) |
