I'm hopefully going canoeing in scotland in a few weeks, and am planning on taking my camera up with us, but am worried about water damage to the camera. Can anyone recomend any of the waterproof camera cases, or do they have a noticeable effect on picture quality? Camera is a Canon EOS400D (dSLR) so will need something that will still allow me to zoom / focus. Other option is to line my case with plastic bags, and to keep the whole lot in a drybag. |

Not really sure what camera that is or what it looks like, but when i did the
round the isle of wight in a dinghy, i took my camera with me and just wrapped everything except the lens and screen in tape. it got wet and never had an issue. One of my mates wraps his phone in cling film when he sails and that thing has survived capsizes! other option might be to go buy one of them cheap disposable waterproof ones, but im guessing you would rather take yours. |

dSLR Cases are about a much as the body they are for, as a general rule,
you'd be far better off getting a dedicated waterproof camera that you can chuck about, and still get some decent snaps out of it, strap it places whilst paddling, etc, i have used a helmet hero on whitewater which got some good action shots, and in the cherubs the pentax option range have become a popular choice for spreadercam |

Or if not for helmet/mounting, I can vouch for the Olympus ì waterproof range. Tough, decent and function underwater cheerfully.

Cheers guys. Its mostly going to be flat water we are playing on so i'm not too worried about capsising etc (I'd hope we wouldn't, Loch Fyne in March is COLD! MattK - This camera cost me ~ £500 and I have a new lense on the way (Which I want to play with in Scotland) For the money I would spend on a decent waterproof camera I could get a decent waterproof case for my current dSLR. (which i'll get a lot more use out of) I've got my ATC2k headcam which will be mounted on the boat somewhere as well. |

Hi Villan, as resident Y&Y photographer i think I can offer some advice! I know Aquapac do a dslr case which isn't too expensive, I cannot guarantee that it will fit your camera though, it might be worth having a look on their website. Personally I use a EWA marine dive case, they have quite a few options for your camera. Have a look at www.ewa-marine.de you can type in your camera make and model and it gives you a range of options. I find the image quality with these is just about as good as having nothing in front of the lens, here is an example or two.... |
