That's it!  Yes all over and Adrian struggled (too much Grappa?) with the vagaries of Lake Garda in the light stuff. See below:

Arrived at club at 8.30 for a 10.30 start. Windsurfers we already out

in the northerly breeze around 20 knots.

We launched at 10 and sailed at high speed down the lake to the start

area. Ad we get there the wind drops and the comitee postpone as they

know the southerly is coming !!! Wind drops completely and we all

slowly drift in for an early lunch.

At 1.30 there is a gentle southerly blowing 4 to 6 knots. Back out in

the sun for the show down.

2 races and the last is triple points.

Both races I start in the 2nd row, but manage to play the shifts well

and have good speed despite the fact I am at least 10 K’s heavier than

anyone else. Both races I round the top mark in 4th and both races I

gybe out into the middle of the lake. All look good for a top 3 finish

but the wind closes down and the local experts creep around the shore

to the finish. I drift over the line nearer the back than the

front. !!!!!!!!

So the weekend was a tale of 2 days. One was windy and I had good

speed, the other light and difficult and although I had good speed I

was certainly out of luck !!!

A great weekend and good to see that I had speed in the light and the

lightweights could hold the pace in the breeze.

Home know and looking forward to the European tour next summer.

Aha!  It depends on what you mean - all usual rules apply - Rights of Way etc.

Luca Devoti says the class is not just about the boat, but about delivering a different style of racing. “Rather than just accept the usual things that we have come to expect from sailing, we want to try a few ideas, some of which we’ll be testing in Torbole:

  •   Fewer races - maximum of 5 over three days (one discard)
  •   Last race - Triple Points (so no one wins until it’s finished)
  •   Limited intervention by judges and umpires (they can only act on the protest of another competitor. If a competitor initiates a protest and loses, he or she is disqualified).

“We believe that these changes will make sailing more enjoyable, more accessible, less exhausting, less confrontational than the racing formats which govern most small-boat regattas these days. But we’re going to test everything, until we find the format that sailors really want, not the one that they are expected to conform to."

At least that's the start but in time the D-One sailors will decide.  Personally I like it

Have delivered 4 in the UK so far and 20 world wide (38 orders confirmed with full deposits) including the USA and even Dubai. We have been in production for 3months and are currently producing 6 boats a month so the UK allocation is falling short of our requirements.  There will be more moulds very soon so production will ramp up to keep pace with demand.  We expect to deliver another 10-15 in the UK before the start of next season.   As more people see and try the D-One the greater is the demand and interest.  It is certainly getting recognised as a great bit of kit by all who have tried it and also those who have raced against one.

I blame Gordon Brown for a slow start in the UK, having trashed the £, but now that people see what they are getting they are happy to put their hands in their pockets for a nice, shiny D-One

We are planning a full circuit in 2010 including first UK nationals in July where I expect to see 20+ D-Ones racing.

Come and try one!

Where are you based?  We may be in your area soon

Update from Adrian after the first ever days D-One fleet racing.

Down the club at 9.00am, sun is out, a lot warmer today. Wind is still
from the north about 15 knots.

First out again at midday ready for a 1.00pm start. Average wind is
down to 12 knots but some big gusts coming through.
Wrong end of the start line (typical) but good speed. Andy Rice starts
on port at the pin and clears the fleet. Fleet splits and half go hard
left and half go hard right. I sail on my own playing the shifts up
the middle. Good safe tackticks. Those on the right get closed out and
the first 3 on the left beat me to the windward mark. Kites up and
find the gusts and get in them. My VMG seems better than those around
me. Up into 3rd. Find some good gusts down the middle. On the heels of
1st and 2nd.  boat in front gybes and capsizes. Big gust hits me, go
vey low, kite down, gybe round the mark first. Cover up the beat.
Course shortened at the top mark, and with a lot of luck I win the
first ever D-One race

Between races the wind turns round to the south and is a nice and
steady 12 knots.

One lap race this time. Wrong end of the line again, hiking hard to
the cliffs. Struggling for boat speed. Tack out to middle to avoid bad
air, round the top mark 7th. Tube and set, looking for gusts bit hard
to spot into the sun. Feel the pressure and soak it as low as I can.
Good gust, gybe back and into 5th. As we get closer to the line the
wind increase and 2 boats capsize on the gybe. Gybe safe and power it
to the line and pleased with a 3rd.

Back on shore and the pasta and beer are waiting for me.

Goods days racing, try not to drink too much grappa tonight, but who
can tell !!!!!!

Ada

Torbole - the first D-One international regatta.

30 knots this morning easing to a gusty 20-25 knots.  Brit, Adrian Brunton, was first on the water for the training session that was organised for today.  His notes are below:

Arrived at club at 9am.

German 420 squad just launching, wind was 25 to 30 knots plus !! Most
of them went over and one blew out their kite.

Waited 2 hours for the wind to reduce

Wind still around 30 Knots, time for lunch

big bowl of pasta and a strong coffee

2 pm wind down to 15 to 20 knots, time to go sailing.

First to launch, with others following me out, kite up and high speed
planing 4km down the lake with a huge grin on my face !!! 25 knots
this far down the lake. Long sail back, but faster and more
comfortable than the Finn.

Back upwind, let's do that again !! Big gusts coming through, going
nearly straight downwind with the apparent wind. Unbelievably quick !!!!

Back up wind, can't wait to do it again and again and again.

4 pm wind is dropping off, back in for a warm shower.

Back to the Hotel and ready to party !!!!!

More tomorrow!
