All up weight wants to be around 145kg to 155kg, although this will change for the new mast.  Jus (my helm) is 65, and I'm 82.

So long as you find a plus 75kg crew you'd do fine, it's more about boat handling than anything else anyway.

You'd be fine in a 49er, just take some time to learn it, and it'll be great!

Best bet is to leave a message on a forum, looking for someone to sail with, and go from there.  I did that a few years ago, and ended up going to the Worlds in Moscow with the guy.

Leave a few questions on my blog if you want.  I'm happy to answer any 49er related issue you have.  Jus won the 29er youth worlds in 2005, so he knows his stuff on the 29er as well.  Feel free to ask away!

i would love to try one out to see if im up to it. its just, presumably with that ilk of boat you need good co-ordination which results only from sailing together. if i could find a regular crew i would be sailing a twin trapeze boat now probably. its just the issue of finding someone near to where i live.

also the money factor

how many crews already have a boat?

Landlocked in Africa

Firefly F517 - Nutshell

Yeah as i mentioned earlier, the main is trimmed for airflow, not to be used as a backstay.  Although, looking at the picture, his main (Danish Olympic team) is a lot further out than is usual, maybe he's reacting to the waves...

On flat water in breeze, the 49er main can sometimes be within a foot and a half from the centre line.  The apparent wind is so far forward at those speeds.

Thats from Hythe Marina in Southampton Water, over the water is Netley SC.

It's a great place to sail for anything slower than a 49er, but we run out of water a little to quickly, so we generally sail from Lymington.

And the kite turns the air a huge amount, so the apparent wind angle the main sees is very different from that at the luff of the kite.

Have you noticed no-one is even holding the mainsheet?

I just can't imagine doing that at all in the 29er, especially gybing!
