Quite right. People tend to get so transfixed on the 'ideal' crew weight and ignore the fact that one or two missed shifts, some poorly executed manouvres or failing to get clear air can make far more difference to their final result. They generally also blame their non - ideal weight for not having sailed well. In nearly all classes there will be days when you will get whippeed by a real flyweight (or heavyweight) due to purely that factor but typically, over a season, we all have our day. Not many of us sail well enough that the limiting factor ito our performance is a few kilos here or there. I remember someone on the forum saying that youi'd get creamed in a Laser at 84kg - what rubbish !. The top guys are only a few kilos less and super fit. For the normal club sailor sailing in a breeze you'd still be hard pressed uphill at 84kg. Admittedly at that sort of weight you mind not keep up with a racing snake inland in lightish breezes (mind you the greatest difference seem sto be in the marginal conditions when the skinnies are fully hiked and planing off wind whilst the bigger chaops are not quite powerd up and not quite planing). Clearly the superstars will notice a few kgs on either themselves or their botas, but most of us wont. |

don't be fooled into thinking that 5kg here or there is going to make a massive amount of difference in all but the most basic of boats - adjust your rig/trim/technique to suit your weight and concentrate on which way you're going and how your sails are set - there's many more races won (and lost) because of a missed tack on a beat, miss-judgement of lay-lines or a poor mark rounding, than the crew (or boat) weight being +/- 5-10kg either way versus the closest competition.

Beer for breakfast - that'll have to go. It's good to hear there is room for improvement. Have sympathy for us poor souls that are nearly 90kg and don't have beer for breakfast!

Welcome to a lot of people's problem. Have you noticed how the fast guys aren't heavy. Most boats - especially fast ones are designed for lightwieghts. Enough of that - what it really boils down to is either burn more calories or eat less. Fatty foods have the most calories per helping so swap them for fruit, cereals and carbohydrates. ie skip the cooked breakfast for wheatabix or similar, skip the MacDonalds at lunchtime for sandwiches and skip the apple pie and custard in the evening for a banana. My solution may not be scientific but I bet it will reduce your intake of calories in a sustainable way. I'm almost 90kg too and a couple of inches shorter - so like my sailing - I'm better at talking about it than doing it! |

Read the Hacker's Diet "How to lose weight and hair through stress and poor nutrition" - Free book online by the founder of Autodesk software http://www.fourmilab.ch/hackdiet/ . A very fresh, engineering perspective into the weight-loss thing. If you are so inclined you will love it. Essentially what you will find is that exercise is good for you and will make you healthier but will not make you thinner unless you manage your intake. Good luck and let us know how you go.

Which means your body will burn the energy from the food you're putting in yourself rather than burning your fat. Nah, definitely exercise on an empty stomach and keep an empty stomach for an hour afterwards. Then replace with 50% protein and 50% carbs if you're wanting to lose fat. Also try to eat 5 or 6 mini meals in a day as opposed to 3 big ones. |
