I had some help

My German isn't up to writing that.I passed a CSE (wots one of those? It was a very very long time ago when mullet hairstyles and white stillettos weren't fashion suicide ( I never had a mullet though, not telling about the shoes) when a CSE was a poor second to a GCE 'O' level)My french is almost non-existant. I have got by in Italian and am swotting up for a weekend in Venice, and the same goes for Spanish, (except the Venice part) which I'll be working on for a holiday in Mexico later this year.

I think we (Brits) do take it for granted that other nations will speak our lingo, after all, it is an international language when it comes to business and airlines.

This is rather ignorant though and I think we should try better... English is now compulsory in Chinese shcools and kids under 10 are virtually fluent. I like to try and get by, even if I'm not devoting time to learn the languages properly, and going by experiences in Italy, it was appreciated by many of the people I met and I avoided getting ripped off in a resteraunt. The great thing there (Rome) was that although a tourist area not many people spoke anything other than Italian.

Mexico may be the same, I'm told the yanks just click their fingers for the waiters so maybe speaking a little will go a long way... even so, I'd like to do more, but have yet to find/make the time to enrole on a course. The standard of languages of European countries generally puts us to shame, someone who can converse in a foreign language on a forum gets my total respect.

i thought for a while what "federfreund" could mean, and when i realised what you meant i had to laugh a lot! i didn´t meant it in a bad way! but you translated penfriend word to word. actually it´s called Brieffreund.
english is very helpful in e very way. i´m learning english since i´m eleven and it helped me in spanish and latin. haven´t got a very good vocab but it´s enough.
i admire everyone who is able to speak german if it isn´t their motherlanguage. i´m not quite sure that i would learn many different languages, when my motherlanguage is english.
