I think that if people actually took time to look at the luff curve cut into sails then they would stand much more of a chance of being able to set up the mast to match! It's one thing bending a mast, but bending it the right amount in the right place is where the challenge lies.

Nothing wrong with that setup, doesn't matter what it looked like, it still went quickly to windward!

12 sails tend to be cut pretty full to get the boats downwind and so need to apply quite some bend to get them sorted for upwind. That boat looks well sorted to me ... Edit: Also that looks like an old rules main that has a lot of batten poke on the lower batten; the new rules fix thatt so you don't get that crease ... Edited by Guest#260 |

Rick is quite right. I think that was one of the Tim Rush prototype 12 sails, which had more than the usual amount of bottom batten poke. Gave a bit of free area along with that nasty crease. Glad they sorted the rules out a little, but nowhere near far enough if you ask me! |

I was once told that when sailing a 12 it's not what your sail looks like but how fast it makes you go SMight at bbsc Edited by BBSCFaithfull |

and me if it was a force 6. Surely it needs a couple of turns straighter on the spreaders and a nudge of whatever they use at deck level to get rid of the crease. Bottom batten poke doesn't automatically mean a great big crease; lots of boats have bottom battens which stick out more than the one above without the sail looking like this.
