I've read all the replies and I accept my 'rant' was over the top and possibly out of order. After sleeping on it I think it was fueled by two things: a) how I would feel if I won the Nationals after the series leader packed up and went home, I'm afraid whatever anyone said there would always be a 'what if' in my mind. But I totally take the point that this is nobodies fault and that these things happen in life/sailing and we just deal with them. Nigel & Emily are worthy Champions and great sailors b) Weddings of sailors are great, but weddings in the summer do result in missing events. I appreciate the support from Medway Maniac as this situation does occur far too frequently in my view, your right it is far too often the mother in law that dictates it, but how does this bode for the marriage ahead? Sorry if I have offended anyone Nigel

On a more serious point - coordinating family/ personal events and sailng events can be a nightmare - often made far worse by the reluctance of event organisers to fix dates.
The latest time on which to announce the dates for a national championships should be at the prize-giving of the previous year's Nationals. Gordon PS My worst case scenario - a girl I worked with in Cardiff was getting married on the day of a Wales - England match in what was then the Arms Park. Husband to be then won two tickets in the club raffle... a sensible compromise was reached - the service was held early in the morning, groom and father in law went to match using in tickets (as did a few other guests), big screen for everyone else at the hotel, and reception started after match... and, of course, Wales won |

Some people need to get a grip, unless you're in the industry (sail maker, boat builder etc.) its only a hobby/sport. If you're good enough to be in contention to win a national, then you're good enough to win the next year, so won't hurt to miss one.
 I can't understand people chosing their hobbies over their families.

I don't see it as putting your hobby before your family. So far as I'm concerned, getting married is primarily a legal event wherein the bride and groom declare their intention to live together forever. Whether it's just them + witnesses or a big do in top hats etc. is merely a matter of taste. Frankly, I thought my cousin got it right when he and his girlfriend returned from holiday and announced they were married - saved a lot of hassle and inter-family jealousies, and meant they had more money to go towards the house and their future lives together. And it meant I didn't have to give up a sailing day |

I dunno about the rest of you but my wedding day and those of my family and friends have been some of the most enjoyable and memorable days of my life. Fantastic parties. I rememeber many details from great wedding days ... sailing dosn't feature so significantly for me as the bonds with family & friends ... |

My wife and I got married and then buggered off on a family holiday. Nothing too unusual about that. It was being met off the plane and telling 6 different people (who were already there) that we had got married the previous morning that was the unusual bit - they had 2 weeks to get used to the idea. When we got home we told everyone else. |

Dead right! These days, and especially in the Chatham area, the amount of fuss surrounding a wedding is directly in proportion to the amount of soap TV the participants watch. |

Someone at our club got married in the morning and did race officer for an event in the afternoon. And I seem to recall someone else from the club doing something to do with boats around their wedding.....now who was that?!? |
