On the Attendance table would it be possible to add a few more sorting columns?

There are other reasons too...
Trapeze boats can be pretty frustrating on shift and lull prone inland waters, most especially smaller and treebound venues rather than places like Grafham or Kielder. And there are an amazing number of such clubs... Personally I have more or less given up dangling on wires because I seem to get cramp in my calves frequently... "Time to tack" "Sorry, can't get off the wire until my leg starts working again" Another factor for the more mature sailor is that I think its easier to sail a boat at 7/8s (looking to make up the other 1/8 on superior tactics and wind spotting) if you're sitting on the side rather than dangling on a wire. Mind you I prefer to perch on a plank... Its interesting though the turnouts that supposedly unfashionale classes get... 26 National 18s this week, 58 Miracles for goodness sake... Do we have a single person on the forum that sails either class, yet they are big enough to be significant. It just goes to show how flawed, even pointless it is to attempt to judge popularity by noise on the net. |

I genuinely believe part of it is a fear of falling in from higher up. That and the fact that a 6ft male is so much more useful on the trapeze than a 5'4" woman, so you limit the number of potential sailors.

Great shot of the Squibs. What always surprizes me when I look at the table is how unpopular trapezing is ... given that hiking is tiresome why do people not want to trapeze more if their water is big enough ....? |

Squibs not on the top now, but still the highest number at a National Championship for a two person boat - dinghy or keelboat!

Having been one of the AOD's for the Lowestoft nationals last year, it must also be pointed out the quality of sailors throughout the Squib fleet. It was a pleasure to watch.....

Are dinghies doing anything wrong as such though compared to small keelboats? I'm betting, and this can probably be backed up by going through the master list and splitting it into various sections (dinghies, small keelboats (2-4 person), large keelboats, beach cats, bigger cats?) that dinghies + beach cats will make up by far and away the biggest total Nationals racing fleet.
Little bit of looking at numbers (but not what I've just suggested: With 51 classes (out of 302 listed) reporting in, there have been, compared to 2008: 16 reporting a rise in attendence- average rise 13.625 boats 24 reporting a drop- average 11.958 2 reporting no change 9 that didn't hold or report a 2008 nationals |

Is the small keelboat market less diluted than the dinghy one? In other word, are there fewer to choose from, so more keen helms have gravitated to the one with the best racing? More power to the Squib, just trying to work out what dinghies are doing wrong?!

Very true Al,
The XODs only have fleets at Parkstone, Lymington, Yarmouth, Cowes, Hamble and Itchenor. We've got the big advantage of not having to tow to get to Cowes Week - everyone sails there. 108 Squibs at the nationals really is an incredible achievement. |

But then XODs, Raters and similar classic classes are also very much local classes, yes? The Squib does, on the other hand, have a bit of geographical spread.
Also, having less boats built, even if the first ones are many decades old, must help improve the boats built:boats attending ratio? |
