Ahh but are they not £6k plus combi plus covers which would make them nearer 7k?? 4k for a 3 year old boat is cheap. I'm not loaded either but a 10 year old 300 will cost you the best part of 3k, so i think the 500 offers good value. I recently sold my 200 which was i thik a 2003 or 4 boat for £4k!

£6K is for the lot. Take a look at their web-site http://www.rssailing.com/fleets.asp?selection=Prices&dea ler=1&fleet=RS500. It offers quite good value either new or secondhand. Unfortunately for anyone looking I can only find a second hand one in Scotland at the moment.

there is a second hand one forsale on the Bowmoor sailing club website. I dont think it has been used much if i remember rightly. £6k is amazing value if thats all in! Especially as the new 100 is going to be £7k plus covers and combi! I know there not like for like but still!

There seems to be one on the RS class assoc website and a couple on boats and outboards. I just joined their E group and have got the low down on the sails debate. RS seem to keep a very firm hand on their boats. Sails changed for the right reasons it seems. Better visibility?

The obvious choice would be a L/V3000. However if you wanted something a bit different I can reccomend both the 29er and rs500. The 29er is not really that difficult to sail. Its a little tippy in the lighter stuff but once your on the wire it speeds up and becomes stable. In the light stuff its much more fun and has the legs on the 500 (and 3000). In breeze and waves they can be tricky however. Main advantage is that they can be picked up cheap (sub £2000 if your lucky). They have a very strong circuit (dominated by sub 25's but still some adults there). Another huge plus is the self tacking jib, it makes tacking/gybing in breeze much less stressful. The 29er is just as fast whether the main is taken by the helm or crew. Normally crew does it because it leaves the helm free to adjust the jib/ concentrate on other things. IMO its more fun crewing while taking the main upwind. The 500 is more stable than the 29er. You dont really get going until its upwards of a F4. However it is more managable further up the wind scale. They are newer boats but more expensive. Nothing bad to say about them really. They are quite powered up when its breezy and IMO were more difficult to depower than the 9er. Where are you based? (if near N.Wales your welcome to try my 9er) Try everything which appeals to you and the mrs. |

You say yourself you need to sail against other boats in your class in order to get better, do you have the time and inclination to go to 2 opens a month? I think you need to look closer to home, what fleets are at your home club? Why drive the country to get class racing when for a slight compromise on some of your wants you can get good class racing at your home club every weekend? For me I sail the boat that is most suitable to my weight and aspirations with the biggest fleet at my local club, in my opinion that is the way to learn and progress. Also you will find friendliness of the travelling fleet and size of fleet do not go hand in hand, decide if you want big fleet or friendly people. A new face at a 200 open is not noticed among 50 other boats but in a smaller class you will be noticed and made welcome. Why is it in every 'what boat' thread people always neglect to advise people to sail the biggest class at their home club? If there is not one bigger class at your club then maybe change club. Rant over! Edited by womble12345 |

You havnt read any of the recommend a boat threads then have you, virtually everytime someone asks the question they get the reply: Where do you sail? What classes are currently being sailed there? |
