Had a mixed day yesterday. First race in the club Vision with the good lady (her first time ever sailing in a dinghy), we got round the track and we were not last (hurrah). A terrific fight in the Laser in the second race, a 3 way fight for the entire race. The result in doubt right up to the line (less than half a boat length in it). 3rd race, very frustrating was trying waaaaay to hard I think and ended up making a lot of errors. |

Wasn't sailing this weekend - instead decided to help keep Knebworth + surrounding area awake until the early hours of the morning. On the barrier for Linkin Park, Nine Inch Nails, and (most importantly) Metallica!! |

Yesterday was a good day..
31 Boats and 14 windsurfers lined up for the annual Ship Race, which although billed as a long distance race is pretty much a jaunt to the Ship Pub in the next village down the coast at Sandgate. My crew was feeling a bit better so we broke out the Alto.. It was like wearing a comfortable old pair of slippers, she's such a great boat and we both had a fabulous day.. |

Raced again last night had a bad start got stuffed by a few boats third round the first mark up to second by the next which was a very tight leg for the vareo kite filling main nearly fogging next leg again very tight flat out all the way chasing after the 200 next leg again just too tight to hold kite and main so i drop the kite watch the 200 sail away so its going to be a follow my leader night.Ended the night 10 seconds behind the 200 over five mins in front of the next boat a 2000 so second in the bag more than happy with that i just hope tonights race is more suited to my vareo than the other boats !!!!!!!!!

1) get up very early, bump my head and walk into the wardbrobe thinking it is the bathroom. 2) Got dressed (just) and on the train to London 3) A very loud person on the phone sat next to me so could not sleep on the train 4) Walk past Buckingham Palace on the way to the office just for the heavens to open up on me. 4) Start work at 7.30am 5) At 12.30pm I skip lunch and carry on working while I try and get some sleep with one I shut 6) 4.00pm I rush out of the office explaining to everyone I had got in work early although nobody really believes me 7) Runs past Buckingham Palace ignoring the requests of the Japs to take their photos 8) Run across the concourse at Victoria train station, grab a bag of crisps and lunge onto my train. 9) A noisy family with horribal little oiks sit next to me. No sleep again. I hate school holidays. 10) Get home, change, get in car all in 3 minutes 11) Drive to the sailing club at a steady 80mph not really caring about my carbon foot-print 12) Just get the last parking space to another anoyance of someone else 13) Get really excited now for my Wednesday evening sail 14 ) Check out the conditions, Flat water a steady 15 knots, little waves to play with - great 300 weather. I think I am going to have a good race 15) No satey boat crew so racing cancelled.

My most successful tacks happened when I did this. Passing both hands behind my back and swapping as I went over seemed to do it, but I haven't got it 100% yet, I'm sure it'll come.[/QUOTE] Grumf it sounds like you need some sailing lessons. If you want I'd be happy to sit in a rib and laugh at you, for a small fee ![]() |

Oh yacht racing does seem very slow the only bonus you can wear less kit getting a better suntan. Out last night for our evening series six mins before the start kicker broke so by the time i had taken it out rerigged it back through cunningham block had a mintue to go had a good start chased an rs 200 for the first downwind bit till i overtook him only for him to pass going upwind next kite leg lots of luffing till i finally drove over the top this was for good as i pulled away lapping most of the fleet winning by 25 seconds on corrected time at the end against the 200 cant wait for tonight race as done two now won two so bring it on. |

I was out not on the Medway but the Solent. Windy too but we were on a jolly in a Sadler 32 to Yarmouth for the night. Choppy Saturday, same wind but flatter on Sunday due to a bit more south in it. My God those boats are slow, I think the highest speed we saw on the log was 7.1 and she beats to windward at about 5.5.

Had a great sail on Saturday, apart from two incidences but they made the recovery even more special.
1st race decided to hold position against the spring tide on the startline holding out on the starboard end of the line. Took my eye off of things for a few too many seconds and ended up in irons 20secs before the start. 1 minute after the start I eventually got out of irons and unleashed a monster effort to get back to the front of the pack by the end of the 1st beat, pheww!!! 2nd race, pulled off an awesome start, leaving the competition way behind only to misjudge the topography of the shoreline halfway along the 1st beat, thanks to the rather large spring tide. Sailed into what looked like a bay, tacked, straight out onto the wire, upto full speed then whammm!!!! around the forestay. Hit the water looked around and the boat was still upright with the leeward wing sitting just on the surface of the water. Looked at myself and realised I was now sitting on the bottom in only two inches of water. Further investigation included spotting tufts of grass poking out above the water. I eventually pieced it all together and realised the bay was infact an inlet that runs parallel to the river and I'd tried to sail across the spit which only submerges in high spring tides, doh!!! Boat suffered a few chips to the daggerboard trailing edge, and the sikaflex wedge in the back of the case appears to have absorbed most othe impact. Eventually waded out of the inlet and 1 and a half legs behind Phil Underwood in his 700, about a leg behind the 29er and 500, decided I needed to do something special. Got upto the windward mark and bore away onto the reach, had enough height on the wing mark to hoist, gybe past the mark and flew to the leeward mark where I caught the Buzz, 29er and 500. The next upwind and downwind legs everything went right, I nailed all the tacks, hoists, gybes and drops. By the next downwind leg I was half a leg behind Phil and he was still thinking he had it in the bag. He dropped conservatively and hardened up onto the penultimate upwind leg, while I flew in like a man possessed, gybe dropped on the mark, and was within 10 boat lengths. Tide was sluicing out so the fetch got pretty free and I went for it, Phil still thinking he had the race, moved in and trapped of the gunwhale, we bore away around the windward mark with Phil now 5 boat lengths ahead. He was getting nervous, he hoisted the kite and one pull from the top he got nailed. As he rolled in I sailed by with the kite still in the sock. I was half out on the wire sailing downwind with just the main up, so played it safe and left the kite in the sock, rounded the bottom mark and flew upwind to the finish. Amazingly took 1st in both races on corrected time. Why is it that when I dont make any stupid mistakes like getting stuck in irons on the start line or running aground I dont sail as well?
