It has character I think. Interesting and probably quite comfortable.
And, as Sten is the only one around here to have sailed it (AFAIK) I shall heed his words. |

No not really ... you go to Germany, for example, where there are hundreds of Devoti Finns all over the place, everyone knows Devoti, LDC may be know as the maker of plastic kids boats like the Feva etc which has done well internationally but none of ther LDC fiberglass range have made ISAF International status ... |

That's the reason I would be a little saddened if the RS100 adpots a forestay. I tend to agree with the majority here though, the D1 is off-puttingly ugly. With Devoti and Morrison behind it, I am sure it is a good boat but the off-centre pole, traveller and enormous freeboard all count against it. And it looks heavy, like a Finn, even though its actually a carbon lightweight. In fact, it looks like a Finn with wings, chines and a kite. In the same way that the Finn si not popular here, but is across Europe, bperhaps the D1 will be. In the UK however, I would expect the RS100 to prove far more popular. Are the rumours of the kited Halo true? |

After weeks of salivating over the 100 it was good to see the D1 again in Sten's video.
In a completely unscientific way and going entirely on gut instinct it strikes me that the age demographic of the two boats are going to be completely different. The D1 target market maybe up to 15 years older than your typical rs100 buyer. It has been said elsewhere that the D1 will be gobbled up by the shed load by the European Finn masters and i tend to concur with this. It's not going to be about who is faster it's going to be about peer groups. You and your age 45+ mates who fancy a bit of international competition will definitely go for the D1, if you're younger, groovier and typically drive small fast cars then the RS100 will be your choice. Have to say that the D1 park benches do make it look super comfortable. GRF... the Frankenblaze has to be a non starter now and in all honesty with having a forestay to get in the way was it ever going to be a starter anyway. What is interesting though is whether the Halo varient with its mega mainsail only will appeal to people who maybe big but don't fancy the faff of single handing a kite. As an observation from the few times i have sailed a blaze i have never liked the straight legged hiking... the D1 park benches that fall into Frank Bethwaite's milk bottle crate test for comfort look much nicer. However, with the power from the mega sail why not simply do away with the racks altogether and fit a trapeze or is it racks for racks sake? |

Not sure where the Halo fits in anyway? Whats wrong with a forestay apart from the obvious? the Vortex has one and the retrofit kyte kit on that feels and works like it was fitted on the boat from new! I think the Frakenblaze idea was a great one, much better then a big rig (IMHO) Unfortunately i think they have missed the boat now! Its not like we didnt try and puch them!!!

If you want to earn a lot of money these days you have to draw it from people who have a lot to spend. In Germany these are clearly the Finn-Masters rather than young sailors. Just watch the huge campers and closed box trailers... People of that age generally do not adapt to new ideas very quickly, so maybe it is a very clever marketing trick to make it look as much as a Finn as possible. Trapezing instead of racks would definitely be too much. I actually sail a RS perfomance boat despite living in Germany, I do not like the design, but I would not pay that much money anyway, so why should Devoti care? Anyway, I do definately wonder how you can design an unstayed mast that is soft enough for optimal upwind performance but does survive the loads of a kite like that.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder! If you think that the D-One is ugly then remember that some ugly people are great in bed (so I’m told). In fact the D-One will give you all the thrills you want without the spills, well not as many as most other asymmetrics! The D-One was designed to bring fun back to sailing, looking at the posting on this thread, it’s hard to believe that anyone here is interesting in enjoying their sailing. On the question of colours the D-One comes with standard hull as white and decks in white, light grey or blue but special colours can be supplied on request including transparent carbon foredeck options. The D-One, as it is today, is the result of an intensive design and development program over two years. That the D-One has some of the best features from a Finn is no accident and anyone who has sailed a Finn will vouch for its incredible rig control. Yes, Devoti have used some of the best Finn concepts and I have to say that much of the pleasure in sailing the D-One is as a result of the decision to go down that route. For the record, everyone who has tried the D-One has loved it and many have put their hands in their pockets and placed orders. As I write this there is a D-One demo/test week at Torbole, Garda and the there is an overwhelming YES vote for the D-One, even with winds up to 30 knots!!! It is a boat with no vices and from my own experience is fine in a chop and waves and will handle the Solent conditions just fine and I am sure much better than some of the boats that are still in the design stages. The D-One is a full production boat and already Devoti are working on an additional set of moulds to cater for demand. We will be doing a series of I look forward to meeting you all at one of our demo days or Chichester Harbour Fed week. Rodney - Suntouched Sailboats |

Ageist nonsense. The average age in the contender class is 45, so we increased the age of our Master category to 50 to stop the very fit 'youngsters' walking off with it as well as the top chocs. We seem to manage the trapeze pretty well. Come to our Worlds at the end of the month and watch over 100 sailors prove you wrong. Better still, buy a boat that's phenomenally popular in the country you live in and let them show you how it's done! |
