Whats wrong with having a beer mat sewn to the arse of my hi fits and sailing a boat with a heart on the sail? lol, I know very little about the 500 have seen one once and it looked an ok boat. Was just wondering what the rules are with regards to the two sail sizes? Do you sail of a different handicap in the same way as Laser/Radial? Or is it just a sort of equalisation thing for heavy weather vs light, fat vs light and can you choose which you sail with? I seem to remember the Feva has two riggs and they always seem to race with the little ones, could just be me though... |

Sense of humour is such a great test of character...
Probably why this site comes up lacking so much more than proper adrenaline sport sites ![]() But you would have thought folk who wear yellow wellies, sew beer mats to their backside and/or sail in a boat called cherub, might at least be able to spot the funny side of a given remark or post. Whatever, back to RS500's Yes is the answer to the question from the cove who wanted to know if the new block made us faster- absolutely, without question, particularly when we're riding fakie.. (Er that means on the tack when it doesn't feel right to those who dont ride boards). In fact come to think about it its actually on the regular tack, sailing to me is back to front, probably because of the left handedness. It's really wiered thinking still further whilst I'm typing, when I was trying to helm and wire on that Musto, the regular, i.e left foot forward tack was strongest, but sitting down and just hiking, its the opposite.. Damn that's another conundrum to think about, although I did have one of those harken auot ratchet block thingies on the Musto, so that might have made the difference.. So ignoring all that, yes, the RS500 is very crew weight sensitive particularly in force 2-3, above and below that it doesn't matter as much except for the obvious need for more weight when its breezy or to possibly dump down to a smaller main, which we've yet to prove or disprove. We have found having a lot of slack on the lower wire shroud things gives us a bit more depower and doesn't seem to bugger up the light wind performance, but then how would we know until we can try it against another identical boat. A damn shame we couldn't get to the Nationals. |

Spot on Dave. In all ways. GRF is a ex windsurfing rival of mine and his ability to wind me up no doubt cost me a race or two. It's also one reason why I like him - he's just so good at it and he often 'hits the nail on the head' at the same time! Back to RS500s I hear that both the first second and third sailors believe that because it was generally light wind, with major shifts and tidal factors, nothing significant was learnt from the weekend regarding fastest rig settings. I guess thats right, but I wonder if from 30 boat entry was there any clear advantage for the lighter crews - or not? |

Don't get too upset about GRF. He has obviously hit a raw nerve by some of his comments but the rest of you are in danger of sounding a little bit precious about dinghy sailing. Meanwhile GRF is at his keyboard, laughing his bits off at getting another "bite". Been there myself! And in some ways he is right. Much of the sail design from windsurfing predates the high performance dinghy rigs by several years. Square top? Loose leach? Carbon rig? My windsurfer had them all in 1985. And no-one truly understands the weather. Not you, not me and not GRF. Basic fluid dynamics and thermodynamics will give general behavioural patterns but there are too many other factors involved (chaos theory anyone?) for 100% accurate predictions from any source. So let it go. It's a big world and sailing's a small sport. Plenty of room for us all |

I just read through this post. This G.R.F. bloke sounds nice. The skill to upset is a rare quality.....but so much easier via the internet.

[QUOTE=G.R.F] You get what you pay for, £5000 gets you a new RS500 with the associated issues that you list. It is however one design for good fleet racing, affordable and able to be sailed by the majority. You however seem incapable of sailing it, maybe more time on the water and less time talking rubbish on the forum! Did the fancy new block make you any faster? Probably not. |
