So at least you admit to liking some Aussie stuff - clearly a man of discernment.

RS500 = a dinghy. Built for fun, speed, and exhilaration.

To be fair, the current water speed record is held by a windsurf. At the Cherub nats in Weymouth, when it was to windy to sail (unfortunately most of the time) people went windsurfing. They were keeping up with us in the car as we drove along the bay.

Conclusion: I need to learn how to windsurf.

Oh, and allow all this hating. Not the place and I can not be arsed to read through pages of people bollocks about why they don't like someone who typed something on the interweb...

[QUOTE=G.R.F]

But the thing that really gets me is all the annoying trivia, those pathetic
shroud adjusters no two brands compatible. None carbon sail battens,
rope that stretches like elastic, cleats that wear within months and Holt,
ffs how is it twenty years later they're still making garbage.

You get what you pay for, £5000 gets you a new RS500 with the associated issues that you list.  It is however one design for good fleet racing, affordable and able to be sailed by the majority.  You however seem incapable of sailing it, maybe more time on the water and less time talking rubbish on the forum!

Did the fancy new block make you any faster? Probably not.

I just read through this post. This G.R.F. bloke sounds nice. The skill to upset is a rare quality.....but  so much easier via the internet.

Don't get too upset about GRF. He has obviously hit a raw nerve by some of his comments but the rest of you are in danger of sounding a little bit precious about dinghy sailing. Meanwhile GRF is at his keyboard, laughing his bits off at getting another "bite". Been there myself!

And in some ways he is right. Much of the sail design from windsurfing predates the high performance dinghy rigs by several years. Square top? Loose leach? Carbon rig? My windsurfer had them all in 1985.

And no-one truly understands the weather. Not you, not me and not GRF. Basic fluid dynamics and thermodynamics will give general behavioural patterns but there are too many other factors involved (chaos theory anyone?) for 100% accurate predictions from any source.

So let it go. It's a big world and sailing's a small sport. Plenty of room for us all
