On the Forth we don't have any option but to race under PY... They have a formula for conversion from IRC but at best it's a compromise. That works from Hobbes' IRC (taken from 2005) rating of .977 to give a PY of 875, though curiously we have been given a rating of 873 based on some data they have from earlier racing. Practically speaking we've found it virtually impossible to sail to this handicap except when it is blowing old boots, and in 'normal' sailing conditions (pre-planing) we usually achieve somewhere nearer 890-900 mark, sometimes even worse.

However PEYC and the Forth Yacht Club Association should now have sufficient data to realise that our handicap isn't a fair reflection of the boat's capabilities, or ours for that matter; but after more than 1000 miles of racing (mostly round the cans) I feel that we're reasonably competent now. Hopefully we'll have a fairer handicap for next year.

If I can find it I'll look out their conversion formula and send it to you, but you might be better to look at data from racing at PEYC where we've had a whole season's sailing...

Has anyone raced a 762 on PY yardstick?

Any recorded numbers?

Does IRC read across to PY in way?

No, we use the standard ones. Not ideal for a quick adjustement, say on a white sail reach, but it does keep the number of strings low.

Such a good picture, what speed were you doing?

I've been getting annoyed with the clip adjusted fairleads on Upstart. Has anybody got string adjustable ones or, even better, modified the standard tracks to be string adjustable?

Yes it was alot of fun, Pink Gin went on to win the fast IRC fleet at Falmouth Week overall for the week. A bit intimidating on the start line with J 120, elan 40 lots of J109 X332 etc, but worth it down wind. Between Pink Gin and Big Purple projections won 4 out of the 6 races in the week, two of these in 10- 12 knots as well as the 25 k on the day of the photo.
