My brother and a freind sailed a 800 once, they're weight probably adds up to about 15stone and were both flat wiring in <5 knots of breeze! Kite up and everything, they said it was really easy and stable...didn't look like it though

So, how would one go about doing this?

Is it another hole in the mast then attach a wire, or is it just another wire
attached to the existing one?

Sounds like just the thing I'm looking for, we often get overpowered.

If it really must be done then I would rather crimp a second wire to the existing trapeze than be drilling holes in the mast.

For about £10 you can get a hook that goes in the hole on the mast with a ring on the bottom which you can then shackle the wires on. A bit  like the 5000 or 800's (i think)

yeah the fitting that splosh is on about sounds like it's the business - but I would then use rope 'wires' rather than 'wires'

whatever you don't make sure you don't wear boots..

Thanks, any reason why rope rather than wire?

I don't wear boots, not even yellow wellies....

Lighter, easier to handle when off the mast, can splice easily rather than needing wire swaging tools etc..

plus they look cool when used with tushingham sails...

So whilst I'm on the subject, and a debate going on about the relative
merits of Assy v Conventional dinghys on the Boards forum threw up the
following query.

When exactly should we apply that kicker thing.

Would it be feasible to do away with the sheeting off the stern of the boat
to something more conventional (The ropes off the back have an
annoying habit of becoming engaged with the rudder stick thing mid
planing gybe)

And any other suggestion why a 470 could be seriously outpacing us
upwind in a force 4-5, given probably lighter crew weight on their part.

Other than that we've been enjoying some success in the RS500, but only
in winds up to the top of a Bft 3-4 threshold, we're going to try the
smaller main which arrived yesterday, thinking it would be breezy
tonight.

Apply none in light wind, as the wind increases, increase kicker.

Overpowered, cunningham (downhaul) on.

You crew is pretty heavy, I'm amazed you get overpowered in the 500. I was fine with a whippet on the helm when I was wiring in a F5 (i'm 80kg). A friend had his lightly built girlfriend on the wire, and that went along fine as well.

Is there a yahoo group thing for this boat? There is for the 200's & 400's, lots of information there, but then they are older boats so more knowledge out there.

I'd be surprised if you could change where the main sheet goes and keep within class rules. Get used to it I reckon!
