You would certainly find an old wooden Phantom or under a grand, as long as you don't mind the work associated with wooden boats. There is a guy on the class website offering boat No 82 which has been dry stored for some years. It needs another sail ( 2yr old sail on website £250). Sounds like the boat has never been measured but I am sure you could could arrange this with a class measurer before you commit to buy. Heres a link to the discussion (copy & paste)

Worth considering, even old Phantoms are a blast to sail

Go for a Contender, you won't regret it as they're great boats - and you won't destroy your knees.

Check out http://www.sailcontender.org.uk/

You are at the top end of the weight range but shouldn't be a problem, a little slower in the light stuff but more power in a breeze!

I wouldnt tough an 8.1 with a barge pole, the rudder for the standard laser dinghy is too small, when you have the righting moment to keep the boat flat,m the rudder looses grip and you end up screwing up to windward., This is my exerience with the 8.1

I would have thought a Finn its just that they dont often come up, great boats though a few at the club constantly winning the races. So if you can find one definately go for a finn!

there's only one option.....and that's a Finn.

they are out there for less than £1k - have a look on http://www.boatsandoutboards.co.uk/ as there's a few there or keep an eye on http://www.finnuk.org.uk/phpBB3/index.php.

Funny.. I think id put the 8.1 at the bottom of the list.
Just goes to show its very much personal choice and theres no one 'right' boat... im sure a few emails could hook you up with some test sails.

Also another possiblility could be a contender? I think you'd be at the topish end of the scale but that shouldnt be too much of a problem i dont think...(correct me if im wrong). But thats if u want a trapeze.
