During the 1984 J24 nationals in Poole we had a lay-day (or racing was blown off) and I got to go model yacht racing with Rodney Pattison and Laurie Smith (who was helming our boat).

Two weeks later at the J24 Worlds (also in Poole) I got chummy with a US guy called Ken Read (Puma Skipper for those that don't know) and on the last night he asked me to go to Newport, RI the following spring, stay at his house and be his foredeck guy.  During the 6 months I was there we raced everything from Lightenings to a Farr 40 including winning the J24 North Americans which was arguably a bigger deal than the Worlds at the time.
We also managed to drink huge amounts of alcohol and generally have the time of our lives - I owe the guy a massive thanks for the opportunity he gave me Clap

Well if we're descending to lows, let me up the ante... I sailed on Etchells out of Cowes once where one of the regular crew claimed to have got his 'brown wings' from Tracy Edwards. I can only assume he was referring to his first pair of dubarries....

The precursor to the Martin Bayfield incident was my friend (all 5'6" of him) going up to him and saying "Oi, Bayfield - you snogged my girlfriend" (a fact his now wife has confirmed as true.  She also mentioned Shadow from gladiators in the same conversation...). Frankly, with hindsight, I am surprised he is still alive.

ASO (who own the tour de france, Paris Roubaix, & many more races) usually do what they like, and the UCI have to lump it.

They have no choice unless they break their ties with WADA which is never going to happen.

Some think Armstrongs strategy is to make the UCI do his fighting for him as they may be complicit in the whole mess ... we should really be taliking about Wiggins ...
