I have a little boy as well who is just turning two. Think my daughter was born pre my Y&Y discovery. |

At the Beastie last week the Tasars were well down the pan especially with the lighter bits. There was a well sailed firefly that was going good guns, but it was a thin bloke with his smallish daughter. Wouldn't want to plonk much weight in them (though I may be wrong, they may take it). The Albacore might be a good shout. We have had a few at our club over the years, and they seem to go very well in light stuff but plane easily and as quickly as a laser and carry weight pretty well

Lark would be good value lake fun.
You want something not too fast, but responsive enough, with a bias to being bearable / ergonomic for light air low speed work, and massive cheaty roll tacks and gybes, hence most hiking singlehanders, and firefly/ lark for doublehanders. Think laser 2k is probably a bit stable and stodgy to be engaging to sail in that regard. |

Other than the Solo, Streaker, and Phantom singlehanders that do very well on our puddle I've also seen 12's and Albacores do well. At 24 stone we're too big for a 12 but might think look at the Albacore. (and yes my puddle is one of those frustrating ones where it can be a force 6 in some bits of the lake but there are always banks, shadows etc where its little more than a drifter so plenty of mast seems to help !)
What do people think of Tasars on a puddle, saw one at a local club the other day and thought the mast looked shorter than an Ent is was alongside, which might not bode well for pond work? And the Lark does look huge value, is this worth looking at? I like the RS400 and Laser 2000 but probably outside my budget at the moment, as looking at a 2nd boat to sail with my daughter so would like to keep this at £2k max. |

First race with my daughter today in the Graduate, 5th First race, 2nd 2nd race and 1st last race. Not bad for a 6 year olds first time out. The Grad is a DREAM on a tight stretch of water!

My wife and son took her Firefly out for her 1st sail of the season today, and it did prove to be, once again, the best boat for a pond by far. (Well, actually by one second on handicap!)

It is relatively heavy boat - so crew weight proportion of total weight isn't that big. And the sails are not that small - have a look at the comparative area with the 200. My logic was actually that on a small puddle you could run it deep because it does have a very deep mode with the Assym up. But to be honest if that's where I was going to sail and at that weight I'd have a Firefly. And yes it's still quite heavy but the boat carries weight so well. And Grumph could have a genuine historical antique!
