Apparently the IoSSC Ospreys 9and possibly other boats) were well stocked with spare plastic shear pins (or rather, sawn up biros...)

Our low tech solution was shock cord fitted as part of the rudder downhaul....where we did make contact it seemed soft apart from the corner into the swale, very dodgy there.

It was the rudder stock that broke, the boat itself is all fine as is the rudder blade. I'll be back on the water as soon as the stock can be re-welded.

Not ironic at all. The faster the boat the more likely you are to rip the whole damn lot off the transom if the rudder blade comes up a bit.

I think the force of a grounding at speed will tend to be greater than the hydrodynamic force the rudder can generate. Sand and Granite being less fluid/more viscous than water!

I've had a few experiences of kicking the rudder up on the 400 at speed, kite up, the load on the tiller goes through the roof until you switch into steering with the main. It's not quite so fast, but it's quicker than capsizing!
I am a convert to clamcleat self-releasing rudder cleats, I suspect they've saved my rudder blade a couple of times.

At least the ICON's gudgeon broke rather than structural hull damage, which is so often the case.
Back on the water next weekend?

Mike did start 30 minutes before the Osprey, Canoes and AltO which went round fifteen minutes or so faster! But still a great result Mike.

There was a Tornado that flew around and won overall and couple of Scorpions that did well too, as well as a couple of sailboards.

Well done mike, you did well, am sorry I missed this I really wanted to try the new boat out and it sounds like the conditions would have suited a first outing just fine. Sorry to read about the grounding and good to hear future Icons will have the common sense expediency of a flip up rudder. How often have I bemoaned the stupidity of fixed anything especially for Coastal sailing and that island is renown for groundings.
Also interesting to see how well the Alto fared, they're lucky my crew whimper out because of the promised light wind, we'd have run them a close race, which would have been fun.
I'm gutted I missed it, sulked all day and now suffering a thorough IKEA'ing as penance for the saturday pass I'd negotiated for the event, so a double whammy. I'm so going to shout at those buggers on Monday for not getting the V twin ready in time.

Icon Rudder .....

Peaky was very unlucky with his NS one but the Icon production boats will/do have have 'regular' swing back ones.  '04' was doing well by the sounds of it if they were holding the 400's etc on an otherwise spinnaker leg, and would have simply flown up the Swale on that very long fetch.  If we'd have known how low the tide was going to be this year Cirrus could have lent him a standard one for the day.

Never mind - plenty of other events coming up and there is always next time !!.

Sorry to hear about the grounding Al and Peaky, it was remarkably shallow this year.

19th overall for us, pleased enough with that.
