Cheque book sailing exists, you are a fool if you don't believe it. You can see it a lot of the big boat classes, fair enough an idiot with a lot of money may not win but if you have half a clue, it certainly helps. Can't be bothered arguing the toss about it but most people reading between the lines will know it exists in some form, may not be independent of skill but it is there.
Bob - Hope 2011 is a good year for the 12s, really like the class. Let me know if there is a spare boat kicking around, would be good to give a few races a crack with my partner. Can't afford a 12 at the moment, but would like to beat Mr. Lang a few times...

Spot-on.
You only really understand 12fters once you've sailed one. They are just immense boats to sail. Nothing else comes close, and I've tried them all.
Not massively difficult to sail or hugely expensive to run, but when they spit you both over the back throuh accelleration, or catapalt you both over the front when the brakes go on, you bloody know about it.

There is no such thing as cheque book racing. I challenge you to name one unballasted class it which a billionaire and one of his millionaire mates could guarantee winning a championship sailing the boat themselves, no matter how unlimited their budget, unless they also happened to be top notch sailors and young and fit with it.

Yeah, but some classes are more elitist than others with the cheque-book racing thing. 49er and 14 are quite bad but in the same instance I wouldn't say it's as prevalent in the 800, the MPS or B14. Fair enough, you still have to have to put a fair bit of money into these boats still but the magnitude is significantly lower. From my point of view, accessibility does cover expenditure and I think it's better to for a class to be elitist from the point of view that it's difficult to master instead of you don't have enough cash.... Funny thing is you find elitism in skill level most often goes hand in hand with expenditure.

I hope someone reads him/her the instructions so that he/she doesn't rub it into his/her arse/elbow by mistake. Some people are easily confused. It's the easiest thing in the world to froth that any class that is more expensive than the one you sail is won by the chequebook - just remember that someone else is looking at your class and spouting the same tripe. |

Like the 12 foot skiff, worked out how to put big sails on without the stabilisers on. Shame the class isn't bigger in the UK, reckon they'd be a good line up with the Extreme 40s and 49ers. |

Menace, you might need a trip to the chemist to pick up some Gaviscon I can't see anything in my post about accessibility or cost..... Maybe you should re-read it, again. My point was that, if putting a T-foil on a 14 makes it easier to sail so that you don't have to be a sailing hero just to handle one, then that is a very very good thing! When I say elite, it's a reference to skill level. Of course if you've read the part where I say "open to more people" to mean 'accessibility', you've misunderstood that my point is related to skill. Open to a broader range of skill. Not diddly squat to do with money. I do appreciate a lot of what you're saying though. I agree that the olympics should be the pinnacle of what can be done. If it isn't a challenge, it shouldn't be there. However, someone who casually windsurfs, could pick and RSX and still go windsurfing. Someone who rides a bike, could hop onto an olympic velodrome bike and cycle round a track without falling off. But someone who sails at weekends in there laser or GP14 wouldn't be able to simply hop in to a 49er and sail it round a square without capsizing. Making fast boats easier to sail is a fantastic leap forward for the sport, otherwise we'll all have to go to the dark side and start buying stuff from a huge grinned G.R.F. just to get a bit of speed. Anyway, I'm all for a womans skiff! About damn time! We've had some fantastic female sailors come out of 29ers and get put straight into 470s...... what's the point of that. I actually love the look of the 470 but it's a waste of time transitioning 29er girls into 470s. Ok a good sailor is a good sailor no matter what the boat but it does seem a little silly.

Actually, Just had time to digest what Doug was saying
"14s not elitist and accessible????" WHAT A LOT OF BULLsh*t!
They are expensive, elitist and unless you've got £30k stashed away, you may aswell give up trying. The new boats win, occasionally the older ones get close but you still need at least £7k to play. We've all heard stories of you can pick up a B3, M11 and if you are really good, keep your fingers cross, go to confession, you could win the POW and maybe the Euros. Hats off to the guys who do, but on the whole, the newer boats are on top. All this from a non-elitest accesible boat...
On a more down to earth note, what skiff classes at the moment are the most popular?
The MPS by a country mile, a very accessible good boat. Next is the 800 and then the i14. The point about accessible boats being good is valid, just think you mis-stated the boat. Wouldn't say the cherub is highly accessible neither, don't you need to be training for your city and guilds in bodgery for that one.... Based on the popularity of the MPS and 800, there have been a lot of good design decisions made with the rebel... or what I'm starting to warm to, baby 49er. Edited by Menace - 11 Nov 10 at 9:28pm |
