Well, the nationals went well, it will be a while before I manage to cobble anything together.  Around 3-4 hours of footage will probably become about 30min total, but I figure this is about the norm.  What I have learnt so far is that it is far more difficult that you can ever imagine, you always will want more cameras, and trying t get any kind of meaningfull footage without getting in the way of the races is very difficult indeed.

Take a lesson from the BBC coverage and dont cut straight from "Paul Goodison has got a good start..." to "...and he crosses the finish line in 4th!"

I'm going to be filiming the B14 nationals this weekend, not because it the B14s, but because its an event i happen to have access to.  I'm planning to put together a fake TV highlingts show using the footage, as if it were to be broadcast.  Has anyone got any tips, suggestions, advice or ideas of what they would like to see if this was for real?  I'm hoping to use this as a "proof of concept" that sailing on TV does not need to be what we have seen of late.  Thanks in advance.

P.S. if it comes out OK I'll put it up on youtube for critique :)

There is a blog from Iain Percy about media coverage here

Haven't finished reading it yet.

When I bought a new Laser top mast from Steve C years ago, he pointed me at a pile and said pick which one I wanted.  When I asked why, I'm sure he said there was up to 15% variation in weight allowed.  That makes quite a difference in terms of stiffness and therefore overal mast bend profile.

Feel free to correct me if I've got the number wrong...

Ian

I had a look on the BBC website and their 606 comments on Sailing. There were 2 comments neither that complimentary. May be we should all sign up and direct them to this thread.

see http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/606/A73539651

It annoyed me that Bryony Shaw spent more of her screen time driving a van rather that sailing a board.

I think yesterday's show was better.  I was wondering at one point if they simply had not been able to get any racing footage and were padding the show out with human interest pieces.  Personally I think if they had just moved the order round a bit it would have worked better.  If they had put the bit about the first races of the laser worlds right at the beginning, then done all the bits on sail testing, road trip, and Giles packing etc then it would have been more engaging.

I am concious that we should not be biting the hand that feeds, we are lucky to get any coverage at all, and an hour and a half in the space of a month is really not bad going, far better than some other sports get.  It is however right that we should be constantly trying to maximise the return on what we get.
