Dan I would seriously leave the cleat off and just try and sail with
the boat as it is. You will find that you get used to the sheet loads
and fewer mistakes will eventually be your reward. Are you running
enough kicker/cunningham?

Get builders gloves, nice and grippy so makes cleatless
sailing a lot easier. |

They cost £93 in force 4 which is probably the most overpriced shop on the south coast

I have got one of these spare (probably fell off one of my too-may boats) I don't really want to sell it but could be persuaded for a reasonable amount of money.
On the contender I have to cleat to tack, but I do have the biggest ratchet practicable anyway. I have just switched to Ronstan Race Sheet, from Rooster Polylite, going from 9mm to 7mm. The Rooster stuff felt a bit too stiff in the blocks. I'm also taking out a purchase. I may be sorry. |

I was using 6mm for a while and it was really a bit thin. I have just moved over to 9mm Rooster Polilite and its great - runs through the 40mm holt blocks fine even in very light winds. I have a ronstan cleat tower fitted, but its adjusted to its lowest setting so i can't actually use it while sailing - but its is quite nice prestart if you are just sailing around gentlyish. I have conscidered dropping it thought as it doesn;t always swing aroung in a tack as easily as a standalone ratchet block. Where i sail the wind is never steady enough to stand on the sheet (well not deliberatly). Try bigger sheet - bigger ratchet block (70mm version) and then get one of those grip strengthening things that climbers use and you'll be fine. |

If it's the 600, get yourself a 7mm mainsheet, a freddy ratchet block, ditch
the cleat and start using the amount of kicker that you should be. A LOT of kicker! If you're sailing in a steady breeze, you can stand on the mainsheet to effectively cleat it. Once I ditched the cleat, I started sailing A LOT better. You have to try it..... then you'll realize. A quick sub note, when I did the RS euro's in the 6, the top 3 were cleatless, the rest were using cleats. Edited by Doug.H |

Possibly not running enough kicker/cunningham as well? The whole thing comes off as one but needs the bearings to turn on. |

Do you have a ratchet block? A bigger ratchet block can work wonders for the arms, and can be switched on and off if necessary.

I have the arm but all the bearings went for a wonder in the tool box and many made a run for it. |
