I came 23rd out of 30, I only did the Sunday and the boat had a mind of it's own for two races and parked itself on the bank on the other side of the pond! |

The boats are great, the handling of them is much more like an IOM than you would ever expect, they do bite earllier than an IOM though. They are so light that they really do plane downwind when it gets windy, they dont need to be going fast for this but you can break into a jog keeping up with them when its a windy run! They keep you on your toes because they are so responsive which makes RC sailing a lot more exciting than it looks. The light contacts are left because it is hard to judge the distances and chances are that it has slowed both boats down anyway so most people choose to keep well clear, and that is the key to winning in Micros. You will find that with time electrics become less of a problem, I now carry 3 battery packs and sail with one before racing starts in the morning when I'm tuning up, one before lunch, and one after lunch, you can also buy testers which you may have seen on the weekend but I tend to borrow them so havent bought one yet! It is also important to use servos which are plenty strong enough, they may use slightly more power than the smaller ones when they are not in use but smaller servos really suck up battery power when they get stalled out, bigger servos which don't stall are much better! Its also a good idea to carry two sets of everything and also to move to 2.4GHz radio as soon as possible because it cuts out all interfeerence and that also saves battery life. Looks like you had a few good results though, so well done, I have had my boat for 2 years now and started racing when the class was still small so it was easier to get to the top of the fleet, so now I turn up and expect to do well which helps a lot psychologically, but for a new sailor to the fleet now it is much bigger this is going to be harder. I got myself a Euros place last year and finished 12th which was nice, especially after being 20th over night, on the second day I didnt fall out of A heat the whole day either! Anyway, well done, and good luck with your changes to the boat, if you want any tips then PM me because I also make sails for MMs (and use masthead jibs David |

I walked past on Sunday to take a look (perfect weather for
it you should have stayed!), since I couldn't get out sailing for real. It did look quite fun, though adjusting to the completely different perspective must be difficult. There seemed to be quite a lot of minor contact that passed unnoticed and a bit of "you're on port", "oh no I'm not" at one time! The boats looked impressive though. Maybe I'll have a go one day. |

It was a laugh, only thing is that you get all the stress of lots and lots of starts, rules (and things happen really quickly and it's hard to get your head round who has rights when you are not sat in the boat!) but none of the adrenaline of a really good reach or similar to make up for it.
It's pretty serious, and really hard! I will have another go though! |

Down the toilet mate. It's harder than it looks!
I thought I'd stick my flag in the ground and make my intentions clear right from the off...so the very first race was an OCS. Oops. It then went downhill from there...everything that could have gone wrong did...I was fairly well up in one race only to go round the windward mark the wrong side (as in not go round it at all...the perspectives of getting a 20" long boat around a floating two litre drinks bottle at 100 yards is quite hard to work out!) I got T boned on a start and tangled with another boat and as the others went up the beat mine just drifted slowly downwind, my batteries ran out twice, the electrics gave up once, I had a head on just before the start and my jib tack got ripped off, and the fractional rig sails which I had carefully made turned out to be "old thinking" now and everyone was sporting masthead jibs and powered upwind whilst I sat there with chronic weather helm luffing on every gust. With a campsite booked for Saturday night and "severe weather" forecast I gave up Sat night and went for a meal and several beers with the other half and a friend in Hove and a proper roof to sleep under...and with more wet and windy weather forecast for Sunday I decided not to set the alarm...turned out to be a gorgeous day so we spent it sat on Brighton beach followed by a minor diversion to the Evans Cycles warehouse sale in Gatwick on the way home! Ho hum, I might try again next year with some different foils and rigs and possibly some glasses as I think I need them! |

I am also an RC boat owner so there was an element of sarcasm there! (I actually own 2 kits... for match racing purposes. really must finish them one day!)
Best of luck Iain. Report back on results. Just remember to pack the correct rigs. They're the little diddy ones... not the ones that say 'Design Source' or 'SP' on them! |
