the opticians i use for glasses, can make perscription sunglasses for 95% of the sunglasses they sell. that includes oakley, ray-ban, adidas, bolle etc. they make the lenses themselves and can do them polarised if needs be and fit them to nearly all the frames, except the wrap around frames with lenses over a ridiculous radius. 4 years ago, i got them to stick some presciption polarised lenses in a pair of £90 oakley tewenties. cost roughly £160 which aint bad. if i wanted genuine oakley lenses it was closer to £300. i lost them overboard and i highly reccomend tight sunnies or a lanyard. now i just use some northshore polarised sunnies with contacts, cost £35 so couldnt care less if i lost them. Anyway my point is, they dont have to be that expensive, you can get all the stylish models as well. the guys that did mine are: the spectacle maker-vectis optical labratories ltd (01983 525272) dunno a web addy. might be worth finding a pair of sunnies and getting them to do the lenses. they cant b the only people that do this and im sure any optician will know who does it. with those guys, they give you the original lenses also, so if you ever want to give the sunnies away or use them as normal sunglasses, you can switch the lenses by putting the frame in boiling water. |

I e-mailed my optician at Eyelink to find out what he recommends (I have no affiliation, just a customer) "I tend to recommend the Rudy Project range, specifically the Zyon Sailing http://www.rudyprojectusa.com/products/sunglasses/styles/zyo nsailing.htm I see they also come with a floating retainer and side shields. Not cheap, at about £175 as far as I can see on google.

While i m involved in water sports , i don't try to wear lenses at all bcoz i've wasted my 3 pairs doing so and every time so it's better not to wear them in water activity at all. I rather use prescription sunglasses now.

'Cuz Oakleys are the shizzle. Serious levels of R&D go into them. The frames are a lightweight alloy (dependant on style) and damn solid. The lenses have a varied thickness so your vision isn't refracted as much and most importantly they're pimper than Mr Pimp of Pimpsville. There's more but I'm just giving a couple of examples. Yes, I sell Oakleys in the shop I work in! I get a discount as well. ![]() Edit: Most lenses only protect against a couple of UV types. Oakleys filter 100% of UV rays. Edited by Ross |

really? i wear gas permeable contact lenses and the only water sport i have trouble is with swimming..(lost one or 2 from swimming) but yet to loose one while sailing, and i've got sweaty before/eyes gone watery, and they haven't fallen out. plus i dont find them a issue at all while sailing(get splashes but blink and its sorted) also sunglasses wise, i perfer using womans sunglasses to the slim ones! as i find they give me a all round better view before a the frame is in the way Edited by ratface |

I had to have a growth caused by UV removed from my eyelid by micro surgery - nasty - so I wear decent sunglasses.
If you are near the city of London I highly recommend my opticians, who know a lot about specialist sunglasses. (not unfortunately I don't get commision, but he did give me a free bottle of glass cleaner after I spent £350 on new varifocal lenses ![]() http://www.eyelink.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&ta sk=view&id=22&Itemid=50 |

I'm a contact lens wearer and at the moment I'm sailing about 4 days a week. I find the lenses good so far, but I've nearly always worn sunnies when sailing. I've just been given a new pair from sunwise, who sponsor England Athletics, and they have three interchangeable lenses for varying conditions. Even better, they have a little hole at the end of each arm for you to put string through.
I will report on performance as soon as we get some sun |
