This years Holt Tide Ride will see RS700's and Musto Skiffs sailing as a fleet. Despite the slower handicap the Musto Skiff guys have agreed to race of scratch, should be interesting. Rick |

I had heard the 700s PY was based on a figure relative to the Asymmetric Canoes at Hayling. Considering that the Hayling Canoe PY is lower than the published PY (as the Hayling boys are rather good) this could have caused the anomoly. The easist thing would be a Grand Prix event RS700 v AC to show that the Canoe is still the fastest singlehanded monohull. |

Yes - but time heals - they said the same about my ride of choice the RS 300 - bot it's PY has actually steadily been coming down based on actual performance.

This thing is fine for lakes with no wind but 30knts on Lake Garda and it would get munched - the sail area to righting moment is all to cock for big wind - which is where the fun is. As for PY's being a measure of performance some have been known to use them to give the impression of performance. Just look at the results of classes at big handicap events to see if the handicap is realistic - such as the Grafham GP or the Tiger over a few years ... Rick |

I reckon the 4000 yardstick is about right (PY 908). Sailing on a reservior with short legs and lighter winds its not as fast as a RS400 PY 952). With longer legs and a bit more wind you can beat the 400s. Get into a force 4-5 situation and long legs with steady winds and it makes the 400 look slow. Get up to 5-6 and if you stay upright you leave the 400s for dead and simply thrash boats like Ospreys (PY 940). Up in the force 7 region I mostly spend too much time in the water but on occasions I've been impressed at the speed of the thing. No doubt Olympians would make mince meat out of me but if you can keep a 4000 upright in a 7 there must be few boats that go to windward as fast. I've sailed a lot of different boats in my time and the 4000 goes to windward in a 7 faster than most boats reach. Keep it upright and the yardstaick should be something like a 100 less than it is.

The rs700 PY and performance is wind speed and wave related -
up to ~8 kts wind it's well slow for it's PY 8-12 kts it's fast for its PY - it has large sails, light weight and planes early. 12-18kts its ok for PY ( unless it's rough which slows it down ) above that its slow for it's py again ( and it's a bit difficult ) |

Everyone said the same thing about the Laser 4000 too, and it maybe true, but 700's still win handicap races against the other RS classes so it can't be too far wrong (unless they all are!)... I am of the opinion that this story always comes out in the early days when most people who buy the boat are learning how to make it tick and it is they who are off the pace... |
