A bit of a leftfield suggestion but consider Oceanus based in Wells Next the Sea North Norfolk. A great place, generally a sunny spot but not too warm.

Hi Pewat,

If you are thinking about the ICC I have a holiday home in that part of the world if you are interested. It is based in a coastal village with a harbour from which you can sail, snookle, dive and surf from and beaches and is about a 10 mins drive from Salcombe (or an 8 mile walk along the coastal path).

If you are interested PM me and I will send you the link to our web site.

Richard

I went to Plas Menai a few years ago right at the end of their season. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable. Our instructor spent most of his week in the bottom of his RIB laughing his head off at our antics (the highlight being the pitchpole of the hobie 16 and a F5 and the helm landing on me having managed to unhook himself and miss the jib).

I would go there again but the current GF has no interest in sailing at all....

I haven't been but other half has to Plas Menai. It is a great centre but does have strong tidal currants running through the Menai Straits.

The centre itself is excellent and she would return there again.

I know James (AKA Ratface) worked for Rockley last year in France, he could give you more information as to what the company is like and the holidays etc.

Hi,
Thanks for the suggestions  -  ICC at Salcombe and Rockley Watersports look worth investigating further.

I have also spotted a "family sailing" week at Plas Menai in North Wales  -  has anybody been there?

I live in NW England, and ideally I would like a bit of sunshine, but not the Mediterranean in August.  I have suffered with heat exhaustion when walking and kayaking in this country on hot days, so I don't want to risk ruining an active holiday.  In a couple of years I might be able to get away for an October half-term break - so could then look at Sunsail etc.

Cheers,
Peter

For the UK, it might help to know approximately where you live- as I'm guessing if you want to do the whole "holiday" part you'd rather not be somewhere on your doorstep. Also, how hot is "too hot"?

My recommendation (though based on working for them in the past, rather than from a client experience) would be Rockley Watersports- either their base in Poole (lots of traditional British seaside holiday stuff to be found in Dorset) or South West France- the centres are between Bordeaux and Biarritz, on lakes just a few miles from the Atlantic coast. Can still get pretty warm during the day (high thirties) but usually cools off at night (low teens).

I have heard good things about ICC.
The RYA chose the centre to film their DVD's they launched recently.

Tighnabruaich Sailing School in Argyll - fantastic location and really good instruction (at least it was a few years ago when my son had lessons there...)

I have worked there too, it's a beautiful part of the world. Good river and sea sailing, with a lovely town too, lots of food, pubs and other things to do as well.
Needs to sail more...
