Sailing on a river, we also have Dinghy Cruises up river or down river depending on the tide. They are more cuise in company so are dependant although they do take a rescue boat just in case. We have an issue with Juniors not participating in Club racing although for the cadet regatta (at the end of cadet week) we could have 40 boats out! We started last year doing Sail Training days which got over 20 cadets out at its peak.

Free intro to racing course will almost definitely help. Then maybe more advanced free courses, for instance since the Stenhouse training at Rutland for the skiffs, I have seen many more of them each weekend taking part in club races and being on the water..

well, manged to persuade the committee to create a young persons position on the sailing commmittee, also now asking younger members to do the power / safety boat courses so they can do duties. Placing youngsters in an assitant instructor role also. I've also been given the job of targetting schools and colleges for taster days and RYA 1&2 courses. Trying to get a younger membership by presenting an image that has youngsters at the core.....not sure what effect this will have, limited probably. We've also been doing press reports in local papers, something we haven't done for a few years. .....but to be honest I think some com members don't want a bigger membership as it presents more work, more wear and tear and de-personalises the club, they could be right? (i'm on the fence with that notion) As a result, I'm trying to work out how to get more of the existing membership on the water. We have run a couple of "start racing" races which have peruaded a few inexperienced teams to race in the regular stuff... But maybe some organised "start racing" training courses would help Edited by GK.LaserII |

at hill head this year we have "race squads" for toppers, mirors, lasers, adults, cadets (the kids not the boats), and fevas. all of them are new this yer apart from the cadet race squad so we shall see what happens. hopefully we will have a lot more people on the water.

..appreciate the replies. It clearly varies depending on the club but our 10% seems to be near the norm. The members who don't sail still pay their membership so I guess it doesn't matter that much. We do have less experienced members who I think would like to race but feel a bit intimidated by the whole thing.....could do with running a "start racing" course (maybe) to get the numbers up. |

We have around 300 members and are lucky if 1% turnout for racing each week. Over the season maybe 5% will race more than 10 times. Most of our membership are not local and alot of them just use the bar and catering facilities instead of sailing

Funny old game, we have a relatively low number of members but our wednesday turnouts must get between 40-50% some weeks. We have very few boats on the beach which never hot the water, we could just use some of those spare members you lt have got. I mean If they are not gonna sail surely it doesn't matter where the club they are not going to sail is based
