Yes, sorry I wasn't very clear, but my point was the five-ohs were doing OK that year! God it was cold  we had ice all over us: when we got back to the shore, you couldn't walk up the sides of the reservoir 'cos it was all frozen, so they chucked a rope down and winched the boat up with the crew hanging on to the sides. I've never done it since!

Good old global warming, it's been a while since we've seen conditions like that!

As I remember they didn't catch FS anyway. As I remember one of them nearly did when the spinnaker pole froze to the boom and Guy slipped on the ice in the bottom of the boat and put his foot though the transom shouting at Alex to get the kite set...

It was quite unreal that year, it was windy and near zero with a ferocious wind chill. Many boats had a lot of ice. On Flat Stanley, for instance, the kicker purchase was frozen into a single block of ice, and Guy and Alex had ice falling off their clothes every time they moved. The ice was I think about an inch thick on parts of the foredeck and the bottom of the mast...

The year Flat Stanley won it (I think) there were about 10 505s at the front, but someone said they'd sailed the wrong course. They didn't think they had, but couldn't be sure, so they all retired. Either way, they were doing pretty well that year! If I remember right, it was quite breezy....

Hi bovlike,

Agree with you perfectly.  We do the race for a nice cobweb blow-out, and actually I'm not sure that the 505 is actually a "bad" boat on handicap. We did all make the top 70, and would probably expect to finish between there and about 20th so it can't be that bad...!!

Merely suggesting that to win you would need to avoid being slowed by the boats around you.....to disengage and blast through the fleet like a 14, moth or cherub seem to be able to do (or an A-rater, but for different reasons, clearly).

I think my best ever BM finish was helming a 14 (for the first and only time....).  Kimball Morrison and I finished early teens, capsizing about 3/4 times in the process......!!

It was wildly fun, if concerning at times...dinghy skewers anyone...!

Its probably been around longest! Depends when BM first started..

420s won quite a lot when it was windy ...

It would be interesting to see the list as Bov says ... perhaps it's on the QMSC website?
