Out of the 2 above Roco go for the leisure 17, also look out for boats like first 18's, etap 20's etc.  These are known generally as trailor sailors, you can leave them on the water or take them out ALMOST as easily as a dinghy ( well no where near as easy but easier then a fixed keel big boat)

Yep, with lead mines (ie anything with a keel) you need to keep a big eye on running costs. Anything you can't take home every day on a trailer can get very expensive even if it doesn't need to be fixed. One definition of a boat is "a hole in the water into which money is poured". Initial cost price really is the least of yuour worries.
If you want to cruise round you might be better off with something like a Wayfarer which is much easier to manage and likely to be newer/better maintained for that sort of money, but can be taken home every time.

Sorry, Roco, can't really help you on this. Although this forum covers pretty much anything with a mast, it is dominated by high-performance dinghy and cat sailors.

With £3000 to play with you are really taking pot-luck with what you get. Keep checking the small ads. Whatever you get at that price will probably need a deal of tlc to keep her going. Good luck.

cheers for the help so far, and sorry about the text speak.

It would be more of a yacht rather than a dinghy, and I know £3000 would be like a car- you get what you pay for.

It would be more to have fun, and "ooh that weathers good today, I want to go sailing" eg a sunshine sailor!

And just to help roco5000:

Help might be available from your local sailing club, assuming you'd like to buy a dinghy. Not only you'd see what classes they sail there, but their training person / instructor might be able to assess your ability and help you narrow your choices.
And ropes tend to take a big place in sailing, so you'll have to get used to them!

Nice one, English Dave . I think we're providing an invaluable service to the younger generations in this forum. Carshalton told me one day that his English improved faster here than after all his years at school. Those skills will come handy when writing CVs, filling application forms or in any other situation when yoofspeek is still perceived as a deplorable fad.   Big smile

Go for a Laser3000. Forgiving and easy to sail with the assymetric but lively enough with the trapeze to give you both a laugh. If you could fly a symmetric spinnaker then I would say Fireball for similar reasons.

Everything that Merlinboy asks is also appropriate. Give us some more info and you'll get some good suggestions.

Do you mean a Yacht or a dinghy???  Not a huge number of yacht or big boat sailors on here and i doubt you could get much yacht for £3k. If you are after a dinghy, do you want to sail it with your Dad?or take turns etc?  Also are you looking to race or just have fun?

basically wanting to spend money before I even have it XD

But 1st like to say "heylooo"

yeah basicall i want to buy a yacht for my dad and myself for say £3000 (i know aint a lot but the autotrader equivalant is showing up quite a few).

Now we arent inexperience I think ive gone out like 8times alone this summer with my dads uncle (as well as all the past eyars), been on sailing trips with him since god knows when, done a sailing course for a two man thing with my brother and competantly sailed a Laser in the south of france on a school trip. And wanting to join the sailing club at uni. The only thing I suck at is ropes =[

So yeah suggestions would be good!

 

And for those nosey sods uncles yacht is a Southerly 28.
