cos they buy into the carefully sold illusion that they can miraculously fulfill all their water-borne ambitions in just one purchase -

e.g.

is it a sailing boat?
is it racing dinghy?
is it a tender?
is it a fishing platform?
is it a swimming platform?
is it so stable you could take your granny out in it?

.... or is it a big, b***dy heavy, undercanvassed wee jobby of a boat which needs an effort not unlike the one the egyptians (or their slaves) put in to make the pyramids just to get it up a sandy beach on a trailer?

IMHO - personal opinion at that.. no offence, just had to help someone move one at the weekend over shingle in our boatpark (moved fine once we had 4 people!!!)
Feeling sorry for vegans since it became the latest fad to claim you are one

In defence of the stratos, it's a great picnic boat - if I lived at the seaside and could chug off down the coast with the whole family on board, I'd be tempted.  But on a lake?  For racing?  At nearly £10k?  (special offer on at present of "only" £9289)

Why do people do it?

Much as I like winning, the quality of the sailing is more important, and the barge concept doesn't appeal.

Off to the club now - the weather looks very promising.

I'm sure I remember the stratos having bigger asy than that but it does look like one. A barge it may be but like some other training boats if you get a fat crew on the wire in a blow with the asy up it can be quite entertaining.

Stratos - barge of a boat ... our sailing school uses them.
