Vortex.

Non asymmetric PY 960, with asymmetric PY 930. Several on website around 2K.

I started sailing one straight from a laser, tricky enough to be interesting but enjoyable from day 1. Upwind legs a delight after hiking a laser, downwind with the Assy a complete blast.

Have a trial sail, plenty of contacts on the website. http://sailvortex.org

Contender ticks the boxes.

Pick up something to learn in for about £1k.  Jump into from a laser, a lot of people have done just that.  Feels fast, bet your life

I paid under a grand for a pretty reasonable carbon hull wood deck IC: the only real downside being a tin mast. I really don't find them as difficult as advertised until it gets into F5, then, well, they are. People at my club who've jumped in mine have been able to sail about reasonably. And it is certainly one of the boats that you must have sailed in your lifetime.

Contender sounds like a good option.
300 is great and that's what I though at first but they're too expensive and there are none second hand anyway.
What about the Blaze?  Could be a possiblity

By the way weight isn't really an issue - the boat's not for me

BTW there was a guy with an IC at one of my clubs, and he coped much better with that than his 700, so they aren't that hard!

The 300 is faster than the contender in many conditions, but the old style IC isn't as hard as you might think, and a wooden on could be cheap. I would consider one for a bit of fun! I would give one a go: I think they are ok for lighter people, and they look a lot of fun, and an IC on your sailing CV looks good  ( although a contender isn't bad either!!)

yeah not really the sort of thing I was looking for.

Fast - PY sub 1000 or just plain "feels fast".

Not too tricky - a laser sailor can jump into one and after a bit of practise nail it.  So not really moth or IC territory.

Water - Open, choppy, tidal.
