Well it's a thumbs up for Craftinsure from me too, been with them for years on the Fireball and the Cherub and I have found them to be very competitive price wise, very good customer service (the MD dealing personally with a claim by mobile even when he was competing at a Nationals) and speedy when it comes to a payout. And after sending my crew through a Fireball kevlar mainsail, it was only a small increase in premium the following year.

Well, everyones experience will be different I suppose I had lots of trouble with Craftinsure and continue to do so even after the claim has been settled! I had 2 boats insured with Craftinsure and they are now both with Noble! 'nuff said? |

I insured my 600 with Craftinsure and broke an old Angell mast. They paid up without any quibbles. I was very happy with the way they handled it and their customer service.

I agree with TT, never had any problems with Noble aside from a claim on my first Laser but they sorted that out after a bit of negotiation.
Aside from that great service but you get what you pay for I think..... |

There were 3 broken carbon masts at the Oxford Contender open last weekend (just think of all that lovely carbon that the Cherub boys will be wanting!!) All were broken during collisions and were not due to the normal forces during sailing or to wear and tear. I know 2 of the masts were brand new this year. Were any 600 masts broken at the same event? |

The early 600s had one appalling design feature of an alloy sleeve inside a carbon mast. Not the only boat with this less than sensible feature, but one of the more notorious. A lot of masts failed because of this, but boats sailed mainly inland are unlikely to have the problem because they won't get anything like the galvanic corrosion of the alloy. Noideas breakage seems to be unrelated to that though.
The laquer or varnish etc on mass production carbon masts seems to need redoing pretty frequently if you want to avoid UV degradation of the outer surface. It will affect the mast properties if you leave it too long. From what I've seen every two or three seasons would be wise in the UK, probably twice a year if you live in Dubai! The reason very many development boat sailors paint their masts is not just for decoration! White or light colours give so much more UV protection. I wouldn't have a clear finish mast on my boat.. |

I have got an Angell Mast on my N12. Have had 2 since 1998. Sold the first, the second was new in 2002. An excellent piece of kit. 'The lacquer falling off' is just a symptom of the finish being attacked by UV. All it needs is a very gentle sanding back and then it needs to be revarnished with a 2-part UV resistant polyeurethane. The Angell has proved to be by far the most robust mast used on a 12 - with the number of incidence of failure very low compared to all the other masts out there and I believe every single failure having been capable of being repaired. Finally, it sounds like the 600 is prone to accidents. As a result the insurance premium should be suitably based. I suppose that with the impact of the shroud arrangements, spreaders etc in addition to the trapeze loadings they must get a pretty good work out. |
