The May update of the web page will explain.The Alto was never intended to to be a 505,improve on the 505 or take over from the 505.which will surely remain the finest large performance dinghy for some time to come..The Alto was initially developed as a two person non-trapeze dinghy.

This statement nearly say it all. Thanks Medway Maniac, and at not much more than the price of the Osprey and Javelin.

Re. crew weight. I'm 10 3/4 st. and sail with a 12 st. trapezing crew, oh, and our all up age has topped 120. The Alton Frostbite series was mostly very windy and even in the 6 plus the Alto was easy to handle. We had comparable speed most of the 50's, boat for boat. We were 3 or 4 stone lighter  and the boat perhaps up to 20 kg less. I suggest a crew weight for you of 12plus stone.

What brilliant 50h video footage you referred to. Yes even 50's can capsize. That great hull shape is shown off at its best! Re. capsize, the web page refers to bouyant top mast, retieval lines and for some of us, a transom ladder!. The new Alto will have far less bouyancy in the side tanks to considerably lower the C/B height.

I agree with your latest posting. If anything the popularityof the Alto should  benefit the 50h, at least in the UK. It will tempt aspiring top sailors to enjoy the ultimate sailing experience!

I'm sure the Alto will affect neither sales nor sails (turnout) of 505's. The two classes have quite different appeals even if they share a hull shape, and will sell to different markets.

I can't think of a precedent, but in terms of different markets I guess it would be like re-decking the 800 for single-wiring and putting a new 3000 rig on it. Some performance loss but much easier to sail - the classes would appeal to two completely different groups of sailors.

Perhaps Oldarn would be the best person to anwser your questions but when I sailed, there was no trap on the Alto. In the winter series at Olton there was!

Only the head board  of an existing 505 mainsail is modified, thus mainsail area little changed.  the jib is reduced by 1.5m2 in order to self tack. A new mainsail is of higher aspect ratio but same area. It has more roach and is shorter on the boom.
