Redback - don't try to polish it if you haven't got ALL the 400 scratches out. If you want a good shine, the coarsest (is that a word?) you can polish out is 1200. Ideally I'd go to 2000. Anything less than 1200 leaves a very noticeable haze, no matter how many small boys and bits of mutton cloth you wear out!

Yes, get those small boys at Bough Beech to do something useful instead of taking up space on here

There's no substitute for practical experience.  Issue them with lint free cloth and polish and tell 'em to get on with it.

Gel coat [the proper stuff and not plastic padding etc] is made so that it goes tacky when left to cure in air. This means when they mould a boat in a female mould, the gelcoat is painted on first, and while the surface next to the mould goes off hard, the top surface comes out tacky. This allows the laminator to get a good bond between the gelcoat and the first layer of laminate he applies to this. I've seen several people use gelcoat without covering it with tape or clingfilm to exclude the air and end up with a tacky messy lump that cannot be sanded easily and will never 'go off'.

USE TAPE!

I learnt a trick today but too late for me it might help others.  I've been filling the worst scratches on the bottom of my boat.  Now that I've sanded it I can more clearly see the the ones I've missed.  What I should have done is sand the surface lightly and then the scratches woulod be obvious.  This has the double advantage that when I put gellcoat on it will dry shiny and be much easeir to spot on the vast expanse of a hull.

Anyway all is looking much better but now that I've been over with 400 grit and half heartedly with 1000.  I now need to polish - any tips?

Another tip. Use soapy water for wet and dry. It prevents clogging.
