If you're based in the North, reckon the 600 would be a good stepping stone to the MPS. The MPS has 30+ boats regularly attending events and bar the Laser and Youth single handers is probably the most popular class in the area. The 600 is also eligiable for Scottish Skiff events which travel southwards to Northern England, so you would benefit from training events, a good circuit and if you do aspire to sail the MPS, there are many sailors involved with the events who would be more than willing to guide you. If you can sail a 600, the MPS shouldn't be too steep a learning curve, in fact, considering hull design, the MPS being chined is more forgiving than the 600 but you do have to factor into the equation the MPS's kite downwind adding another dimension to the boat.

I'm 60kgs and I sail a Contender! Badly, I agree, but I can right it from a capsize, even inverted.
The rest is knowing your limits and improving your technique (I'm quoting people who can sail) Go for a Contender, there are loads of decent second-hands around!

sounds good advice to try both 300 and 600. what are your views on the old school contender. is 65 kg too light?? how does it compare on the water to the 300s?

The ronstan is 12ft long but wasnt designed as a 12footer so probibly wont measure as a skiff. From memory I thing the sail area is a little less than a cherub with an adjustable wingspan giving up to 12ft beam? Thats some serious righting moment if im remembering corectly!

Andy would be able to tell you more as its his brothers boat...

Back onto the original question though: I agree with the general opinion: you probibly need a sail on both to decide whats right for you.

Looks like the 600 might be the boat for me then. just a bit tempted by the crazy looking 12 skiff though.

cheers.
