get together with some of your squad/ mates at club and train! Buy a decent drysuit and just keep moving. With all the extra practice you'll beat the fair weather sailors who sit in the clubhouse with a pint and a remote controll come the new season.

The great Paul Elvstrom reckons that saling in Nordic winters was the best
way to crack sailing in waves - when it's icy cold you really want to get it right if the water is freezing! |

Or you could put your Skiing Thermals / Polar tec 200 fleece trousers, P300 fleece jacket on under your dry suite and GO SAILING in your boat you sailed all summer If it's not frozen up, the lake or sea is not frozen up then why not. I remember one Grafham Grand Prix about 15 years ago where the tramp was freezing up, so was the spray on the sails and the sheets were too. Tacking was swift as you had to grab something to stop you sliding right out the other side when you came off the wire

Had promised to stay under my rock , but ! What a bunch of chicken wimps . Or is it that up north we are so used to the cold we don't care . Firstly our group of 25 plus rc laser sailer ALL are practioners of the "real thing" , Cat sailors , skiff sailers ,mono /two handed dinghies , laser sailers , sportsboat sailors , drunken and every other type of competitive sailors out there. During the winters in Scotland winter full size sailing seems to be the domain of Junior RYA squads etc whilst us parents ashamed at the nippers sailing in sub zero winter gales make do with excercising the digits on a transmitter. When racing one design boats in double figures over courses short enough to throw your granny over you don't have time to think about getting cold , anyway you can dress up for it !,our races are held back to back and a 20 secs countdown keeps things fast n furious, racing is kept fun , penalties and insults are traded, we've had up to 15 races in our 2hr period for series racing and series race every fortnight , the less henpecked sail every weekend . We don't stop for wind ,rain, hail or snow . This year most of the fleet have bought renegade John Tushingham D rig storm sails so that racing will be a bit more fluid in the 40 knot howlers we expect doon by the sea at Rhu Marina. Fleets are popping up all over the country as even more bored "Real thing" sailors are buying rc lasers for winter racing . Sniff one out and have a look , but , beware It's highly CONTAGEOUS !!!!!

Best thing for winter sailing is to live in Singapore - winter temperatures of 30 degrees C, NE monsoon winds of 15 knots all the way from November to March...and of course ice cold beer after...

Ice sail plastic oppies on a frozen lake, not easy and steering requires a paddle of some sort but a lot of fun

Hello Sunshine
The yachties in Edina, Minnesota USA hire a local swimming pool and some fans and race radio controlled Lasers once a week while the lake is frozen over. The fleet captain tells me it works well and It seems they have lots of fun. I'd like to try it at the London Boat show - the powerful fans they have could make for some keen racing. Short of that it's lots of warm gear and a flask of coffee for us. |
