I thought that if a boat was drifting and not under the control of it's crew, if you put a line on board, you could potentially claim salvage. That's why you should give anyone offering to rescue you one of your lines to tie to their boat, as it proves you where still in some control!

Nope, but they have to agree to be salvaged - you can't just start towing someone's boat away then claim money for it! |

I wouldnt be able to stop laughing if that happened!! (Although i thought salvage could only be claimed if none of the surviving owners/sailors of the boat were on board alive...???) Doug |

Looking at it from another point of view, if a boat is rescued it is possible for salvage to be claimed on the boat by the rescuer. Just good practise from the rescuers point of view not to do so and vice versa in the case of claiming damages against the rescuer. |

Threads with definite answers disappear into oblivion after 3 posts and are truly forgotten until a newcomer asks the same question again. He/she gets the the "didn't-we-talk-about-this-once-already" standard reply and the thread is abandoned again... No fun. Now, when starting a thread, make sure there ISN'T any obvious answer and we're all in for pages and pages of entertainment! |

Well Dave, not yet but I am trying hard. Don't tell JT. Confidence is building in the Tornado and we are starting to actually sail the boat rather than the other way around. Now that the boat is set up as we want it, repair costs are no worse than any other assymetric cat. It is nice to be able to play with shiny bits of carbon though, mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Carbon!!! |

Funny how people make assumptions based on limited information. It was knocking on the door of 30 knots when I won my first 600 open, and consistantly over 30knots when I came second (lost on tiebreak) at another. I am perfectly capable of sailing in strong winds and often do. This was a one-off accident, and the 40 knots I referred to was the maximum gust, not sustained.
