Or use a spin-lock halyard cleat that doesn't suffer from the sawing problem.

Having said which, though mine is fine, Jeff Vanderborght's failed to grip the rope and has been replaced with a standard ronstan cleat!

The answer, Phant, is to mount the block on a swivel (or just tie it in place) and always take the line from the block. On hoists take the left side and cleating is automatic, on drops the other side and the halyard is automatically held out of the cleat.

We tried an extra block on the right kick rail, but just had re-cleating probs on drops and no appreciable benefit.

I personally would fit a second block mounted to the deck on the 'up' side to
mirror that on the down side - otherwise the haulyard rope quickly saws
through the plastic loop on top of the cleat unless you pull back parallel to
the deck, which isn't very ergonomic! Plus a bit of shockcord to take up the
slack - very easy to do, and should stop all those annoying tangles come
hoist/drop time.

Admitted the deck layout isn't perfect and untidy sailors like me often end up with spagetti at the mast foot....  but at least it's simple and with the off the boom sheeting, transom bridle and gnav there's now loads of space in the boat.  Especially with the spinlock kite-halyard cleat you can launch from anywhere you can get a hand on the launch & drop rope - do don't really think it needs double siding.

Meanwhile, a repeat of my sail measurements still makes the main a shade under 8.5 sqm! Which is slightly smaller than laser claim for the original!  Yellowhammer, you have both types - lay one on top of the other for us please!

But the v3000 hull weighs just 54kg, clearly a class leader on weight.

Southerly winds = poor kite legs. Looking good for the 600 again Doug!

But the kite halayard does need to be double sided. As i repeatedly and rather irritatingly found out today whilst crewing one.  Tom will be testiment to how irate i got attempting to hoist and drop the kite.  Although it is quite frictionless which i was impressed at.

The latest rules allow you to run the kicker aft (as I've been doing the last couple of years -you've not been paying attention, Doug!), and the downhaul is so rarely used on the 3k it's hardly worth mentioning - except: the boat is so narrow that with an aft bridle it's a doddle for the helm to reach forward and operate it, or indeed the outhaul on the boom.

As for the kite halyard, it has a pulley which you always pull from, both on hoists and drops - certainly goes up and down easier than on your 4k, unless nobody's shown you how to use it properly?

The great thing about the 3k is that the systems aren't and don't need to be double-sided, saving a lot of faffing and string in the boat.

The lack of pulley and tack up system for the kite halayard meaning its a pain in the arse to do a proper hoist and drop.  The kicker and downhaul being lead to the bottom of the mast where its a pain in the arse for anyone to adjust!
I reckon there's a good basis to start with for a poor deck layout......??
On the other hand, it doesnt have a self tacking jib which definately gives it some brownie points with me.

Doug

That's a sweeping statement, and one I'd disagree with strongly. Would you care to elaborate?
