For a beginer I'd say the Supernova.  Its easier to get close to maximum performance and the skills you learn are generic whereas the Laser is a bit quirky.  On the other hand close racing is a very effective way of increasing your skills quickly and the Laser provides that at most clubs.

As for clubs looking at Oxford Sailing Club - lots of Lasers, and/or West Oxon Sailing club - lasers & supernovas.

Thanks again.

I'm a sponge taking in all that is said, to try & make an informed or is it ill informed choice

I did most of my sailing as a youngun at wosc but had to move to farmoor when i realised id run out of water very quickly at wosc in the boats i wanted to be sailing. Either im sure would suit you though farmoor (with much much better sailing) is a little more unfreindly as a begginer as the racing aspect is taken more seriously than wosc

If you're not a heavy weight join the herd and go for the laser to begin with, there's always multiple lasers to race against in every handicap race. Once you get bored of that you should of found enough people at your club to try their boats and find one you like.

Also which club are you joining and what boats are there already, there's usually a reason that there is a lot of a certain class at a club, (obviously any club you go to will have laser's in abundance.)

Unbiased opinion? Dream on....

You just have to try them both and go with your instincts. And if you then regret your choice, sell it and get something else.

I won't tell you my choice because it is definitely biased.

Looked through the forums, read the reports, listened to advice, but still not sure which way to jump.

New to sailing, a RYA 1&2 course and a friend who's willing to be subjected to my attempts at sailing.

I've decided I'm going to go for a single handed boat, enjoyed the fun of racing - as crew so far, so I'm leaning towards either a Laser or a Supernova.

I'm trying a laser just got to sort a Supernova, but think I know someone at WOSC.

Having looked at both the websites and forums for each, they both are pro their own, not surprisingly, so who's for an unbiased opinion.

I am a novice, but want to learn.

All comments welcome.
