Yeh they do have a fair few Contenders there mate, and i think for my second boat that will be a must, but learning to trapeze sail before i can even properly sail so much as a Pico might be a lil daft.
I think i'll definitely go with a Laser for my first season or so then pick up a contender or sumin similar and get wet ;-) |

Hiya,
Gonna be sailing at Weston Sailing Club in southampton hopefully, havent joined yet but in process of. They seem to have a wide variety of boats down there, RS, Lasers, Cherubs, Gp14's, quite a big club it seems. All the comments much appreciated, its nt an easy decision, though laser seems to be the consensus "wise" idea for at least my first season, so i might go that route. ![]() |

I would suggest trying a few boats to start with. Something relatively sedate and keeping to the lighter airs while you gain experience and confidence.
Laser is always a good bet, there are always good fleets around and while they do have vices if you stick you F4 and below you should get the hang of it pretty quickly. Once you have mastered that look for something a little more exciting. Around your weight i would suggest a Solution or a Blaze, you are probably a bit light for a Phantom at 88Kg. Just my opinion of course. |

I've seen people struggle with Lasers when they first start, something like a Streaker would be more forgiving (no nasty death rolls) and still carry your weight |

Komier, Where are you going to be sailing? It may be worth finding out what people sail at your club and going with that. You will then meet lots of people and learn a lot from them, saying that you'll probably find the Laser is still the boat for you .

Thanks for all the replies guys, much appreciated. Very helpful and informative.
Think i will pick up a cheap laser say ~1K and sail that for a season as well as maybe some crewing for other people if anyone at the club is looking. Will think again next year about upgrading. Will let you know when i pick one up ![]() |

If there are any Supanovas at your club have a look at them too. Otherwise ask people if you can have a quick ride in their boats to help you make up your mind. But remember they will always encourage you to get one because they either want to build a fleet, or sell a boat. |

Best bet would be a Laser, if only because they're easy to sell. Do a season or so, and you'll have a much better idea of what you want/need. Of the others mentioned, 300/finn- too demanding and not always easy to buy/sell. Vario would be nice, and is very much something you could grow into, but they aren't cheap, although you should get your money back. Fevas and Picos are too small for a 14 stone person! Let us know what you go for. |
