Wow! that is a big question. Mr. Ugg, who was a caveman ancestor of Frank Bethwaite, Stuck a thin stick into a floating log, hung a skin over it and thus invented the first sailing boat(log). Since those far off times development has gradually slowed until the invention of the Tasar (the first modern boat). I do believe that since then development has almost reached a standstill. Little tweaks here and there but there is only so much you can do with a floating thing that gets blown along. We do have foiling moths but all they are is a lighter log with a bit of shaped bark on the bottom. I would point out that Mr. Ugg was three times National Champion until Mr. Trog found that a flat stone wedged into his log bottom enabled him to outpoint Mr. Ugg.I could go further and tell you about the first Worlds but it would be boring as no body knew that the word existed.

Not a very well phrased question but I think I get what you are asking.
Basically you are asking if we now have all bases covered, and dinghy design will esssentially stagnate until the next paradigm shift in materials technology.
In short, I suspect not.... Many of the more recent boats have been built fairly solidly, and as time rolls on the current exotic constructions will become more widespread in use and will enable similar solidity for less weight. In recent years many lessons have been learned in the world dinghy sailing (and marketing I suppose), so things move on remarkably quickly. Although on the face of it you could say that the same product is being wheeled out in different wrapping, a few more years of development and experience invariably leads to improved performance and usability.

I don’t work for any design group, sailing equipment marketing group or any company like that to give me ulterior motives (I’m actually a lazy, scrounging student), however, I’m curious weather the general sailing public believe that there is a market for any new design of dinghy (until materials develop to a point where radical things that structurally aren’t possible now, become so).

Are we now truly at the point where there is a boat for everyone and the companies that are churning new designs out are simply trying to re market the same product in a different wrapping?

So in the true stile of internet forums: Discuss!
