Thanks for the explanations Catmandoo and 29er397
I ought to have picked it up unaided.

I mean the meaning not the actual jobby.

Beware of more sail than ballast.

Best use the word "wotsit" or "thingymajig "to save confusion

especially if sailing at Largs and the jobbie (something) you want is next to a (unwanted ) Jobby on the tramp ,could get nasty

Any way if you do find one its best to wheech it away (throw) and then you can call yourself a Jobbywheecher and become a well respected member of the community

similarily if it came upon you you could "wheech the keech" .

Think we've strayed from the topic

caught a mackrell in my Laser once .jumped into cockpit , grabbed it smacked in its heid and chucked in to rescue boat , took it home for mothers day !

The above 'jobby' is very undesirable, however there is another type of 'jobbie' which is a word which can refer to pretty much anything. an example

'one o them jobbies' *points a finger at something*

A term usually used when the real term is unknown, can be very usefull in the world of sailing.

Unless you're into that sorta thing

Jobby Ancient word now only used by Billy Connoly as a euphemism for sh*te.

How does a wee Jobby diminish one's joy?

Is it undesirable in some way?

Over here the usual 'catch' is flying fish. They just happen to land on the deck. If they are alive I throw them back.

Deliberate fishing is over longer distances 100 - 200 miles or more.

With the right tackle you are guaranteed a catch.

Usual is of the tuna family but some other fish are also willing. I even caught a sword fish once. It was only a baby a little over a meter long and tasted very good.

It was interesting that it hardly put up a fight till I tried to pull it out of the water.
