if your under 68 kilos try a Byte, there are some around for about 500 quid you will be close to the pace of the guys and girls with the CII rig possibly slightly quicker in choppy conditions and when you've save up a bit more you can upgrade to a CII rig which even on a 500 quid boat will see you at or near the pace of the fastest guys, if your spend enough time practicing! Don't believe me check out the sail number of the national champ then look on the 2nd hand boat list! oh and the CII seems quick with bit more weight (bigger weight range) in the boat the world champ weighs 73kg.

Lasers are too expensive unless you are lucky. Lightnings are a possibility. They have low tech fibreglass hulls and simple robust fittings. They also sail way above their PY in light conditions. For proof of this check out "nationals winning boat for under £1000" on this forum.

An older int. moth could be grabbed for that sum. be it a fairly good nick of fat moth or a beginners narrow moth you would learn a lot from it but it really depends what you want |

If your club sails a singlehanded class, buy a cheap one, save some money, sell the cheap one for what you paid for it once you have progressed enough for a newer boat to make a difference. And if anyone from your club travels, then you'd have company. If you want a wooden boat you can do a spot of work on when time permits, but sail straight away anyway, there are plenty of choices, from British Moths (good on small water) to Streakers (good on bigger water) to Solos (good for a slightly bigger person.) You could even get an old Phantom for that, if bigger boned. But you won't win in it! Or sail a Firefly singlehanded - plenty of us do, and they go for that or less.

Not sure there is much choice of classes that you could "take to events" and be semi competitive for £500. I think you'd even struggle a little at that budget even to be semi competitive in club racing, depending on the club obviously. An old Laser that hasn't been abused too much might get near to the mark, and you could upgrade sail controls and sail when budget permits.
