Don't use the plate is the simple answer. Use stainless steel D rings bandaged onto onto the spar with unidirectional carbon.

Stainless steel rivets are probably the best bet, but you need a serious rivet gun to pull them.
They will discolour but generaly do not get any worse than that unless there is movement. Zinc chromate pase can help with this a bit but does not last long. the only way to avoid it is to ensure that the carbon can not touch the metal with a layer of epoxy.

You also need to know the thickness of the mast so you can pick the correct length of rivet.

If the mast is sleaved at that point it may be too thick for rivets in that case you can use self tapping screws. They are loaded in shear and work supprisingly well but the hole you drill must be exactly the right size for the screw if it is too small the laminate will crack
If it doesn't break it's too heavy; if it does it wasn't built right

I'm not sure what you could use to attach it but I do know that you have to be careful what you do use as some metals have funny reactions to the carbon and will damage it

I've just got a second hand carbon mast for my IC, unfortunately its rigged for a strut not lowers, I need lowers because I've got a self tacking jib. I've got a lowers plate like this http://www.sail-sport.com/cgi-bin/ss.cgi?usr=58335&page= showitem&pid=SRISP005 but what's the best way to attach it? If I use rivets, what type should I use?
