"Ten years of working through the committee....has left me a little jaded"
This pause in club activities has left me evaluating my involvement in club activities. I'd like to cut back a fair bit as I realise how much time the club has been taking and how many other things have been put off or neglected. I'm thinking of issuing a list of maintenance jobs to do and stepping back. If the other 350 adult members want the boats they can turn out and practice their skills while I just provide the bits and some guidance. I wonder how many other long time committee members will step back a bit now? |

Sail to socialise or Socialise to sail?
I suspect most club members fall into the first group much like blokes who follow football because it gives them a reason to come together and a safe subject to chat about. Ah well, might give it a go tomorrow anyway. |

Have you ever considered that the more you chase risk the more liable you become in the event of an accident. That is to say the more services and you provide to reduce risk the more liable you may become should those services younorovide have a momentary blip in quality. |

Don't think sailings got a problem with insurance claims. Enjoy your sailing.

I know you’re right Rupert, where we are is where we are. Ten years working through the committee, flag officer & commodore has left me a little jaded. I’m in no rush to get back and when I do an hour losing myself in Contender playtime will do just fine, unless of course my wife fancies some single wire three sail action.

I think I agree, but maybe see what many clubs are doing as a collective way of keeping members safe. So, signing up to sessions ensures that numbers are spread out. Limiting access means fewer things touched by many hands. Signage reminds members of how to keep safe.
Can this go too far? Undoubtedly. I suppose I'd rather things went a little too far than not far enough, but everyone's view on where those points are will be different, so in the end we have to abide by club committees making decisions on subjects upon which they, like us, arent experts. As the weeks go by, I hope things will relax without an increase in numbers catching the virus, so we can start playing properly again. |

Yes I absolutely agree Rupert with caution tied to personal responsibility , not passing the blame. If you see what I am saying.

Because we don't want to pass a nasty virus on to someone who might die from it? Its called caution.

Because we live in a litigious world where any accidents big or small, especially resulting in death - someone has to take the blame. Ambulance chasers are legendary these days. So clubs have to ensure that they provide a safe environment in which to go sailing. Especially if the water belongs to a 3rd party and safety boat facilities are normally provided by the club. It is not enough to say - go sailing at your own risk. Directors of the club can be liable..... Edited by Chris_H - 22 May 20 at 1:39pm |
