Its really easy to cycle to Weston, there is a short cut for bicycles along the shore. Or even a bus then walk the last bit is possible if you don't have a bike.

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.

Im at the uni and saila 49er at weston. its really freindly with a good racing program, you should definatelly join, itd be great to have even more fast boats out! also its a 30min cycle from the uni or 20mins from the institute, so all the talk about needing a car is rubbish!!!

If you want a decent engineering degree go to southampton uni. Ship science despite the name comes under the school of engineering sciences along with mech eng and aero and is an engineering course. For engineering soton uni is one of the best in the country and the department is well regarded. As far as I know the course(s) run at the institute are quite different and I have no idea about it's reputation in the yachting industry or any other. One thing to bear in mind is that the institute has only just got university status with nowhere near the reputation and ranking that the university has which is ultimately what matters. Choose wisely and look at where the graduates from these courses are working. As for how far away Netley/Weston are, you WILL need a car to get there. It's 3 junctions down the M27 from where you will be. Edited by m_liddell |

The Bieker example is kind of what im hoping for in an ideal world, I
think theres a lot more oppertunities to be had and money to be made
working with the tankers etc, but hopefully I can still work with small
boats on the side.

Maybe, but of the designers I'm familar with John Spencer and Russ Bowler both trained as architects, Farr didn't do a degree at all I don't think, and Paul Bieker, whilst a trained Naval architect, nakes his living from tankers and stuff, so I don't know that its that essential to do a degree in yachts to work with them. And it may make sense not to work with what you most want to do in your spare time... But hey, I'm no career guidance expert (you should see what my "career" is) so I could be talking BS. |
